“Not all treasure’s silver and gold, mate.“

Shadow awoke with a hiss, an ache in his back and neck, and a bright beam blinding him. He must have forgotten to close his blinds before he fell asleep. He lifted his head off the cool wood – He had accidentally slept at his desk instead of his hammock. Shadow peeled a small note off his cheek, frowning deeply at his own incompetence. What kind of Captain fell asleep while working?
The dark hedgehog stood up with a low groan, rubbing at the back of his neck while he slid his chair back into place. He rolled one of his shoulders while he tore off his old clothes and donned his proper outfit – A white lace up undershirt, his signature red tail coat which he popped the collar of, his gloves, boots, and, of course, his hat. There was no Captain Shadow without his hat. He straightened the few Flicky Feathers attached to the red fabric, and just as he was about to push open the door to his cabin, he had realized there was one very crucial thing he had forgotten: He wasn't wearing his eye patch. Shadow gazed down at the rough black leather, softly bringing his hand up to touch the jagged scar... “No.” He snapped to himself, closing his eyes for a moment before he let out a firm huff, and attached the patch, making sure it didn't mess up his quills.
Shadow stepped out into the warm summer air, humid and salty from the lapping waves rocking the ship. He spotted a new member aboard The Maria: Just a young thing that he doubted would make it past Emerald Cove. And for good reason – The sea was as ruthless as she was deep, and just as unpredictable; a few would be lost to her embrace, so it was best not to get attached, even to the most resilient of the bunch. Shadow tore his attention away from his crew, dark ears twitching as they caught... Something. Some kind of melody.
“Captain! I spotted a large irregular wave pattern headed straight for us. What do you think it could be? Whales, or something worse?” Shadow turned, eyeing the crew mate who had given him the news. A slightly older wolf named Kiren, who held out her telescope. The dark hedgehog took it, easily spotting the waves she had been speaking of. They were too far from any whale nesting grounds, and dolphins were a little too small for that big of a formation, even with a big pod... Very few creatures of the deep would make those types of patterns in the sea. Shadow’s eyes widened. He had to warn his crew immediately. But he didn't get to even open his mouth to speak a single word when that melody he had heard so far away grew more insistent, and... Why was he scared again..? It was safe, it was nice... He should jump into the water. Yes. That's what he should do. Jump. Into the water.
Shadow shambled up to the railing, hands grasping tight onto the wood, eyes blank and ears perked towards that gorgeous song, drawing him deep, where he should be. Where everyone needed to be. He needed to fall into their embrace, where he would be safe. And just as he was about to hop over, muscles tensed, a splinter caught deep into his glove.
The sharp pain managed to snap him out of the trance, his hands immediately coming up to cover his ears, and he quickly backed away from the edge. “Sirens... Everyone! Cover your ears, now!” He cried, watching on in horror as multiple of his crew fell over the railings, now certainly grasped tight into the Siren’s clutches, never to be seen again.
Shadow could not help them – For to do so would require subjecting himself to their songs, and he would be of no use then.
