At the same time, Sugimoto can be quite impulsive in his attempts to protect others: after Ogata shot him in the head, Sugimoto suffered brain damage that has resulted in him becoming more reckless and easily angered. He grew up in a village with his family and was close friends with Toraji and Umeko. Sometime during their youth, Umeko and Sugimoto fell in love, and Sugimoto planned to spend his life with Ume. However, it was not meant to be: in 1899 his family contracted tuberculosis and succumbed to the illness shortly. Afterwards Sugimoto burnt his house down and left the village, fearing he might be sick too. The next two years he travelled to different places across Japan but tried to stick to towns that didn't have many people around. He returned to his village on the day of Umeko's marriage to Toraji. That night Toraji confronted Sugimoto and accused him of wanting to steal Umeko from him. Sugimoto denied that and said that he was planning to travel to Tokyo now. In 1901, Sugimoto travelled to Tokyo where he met Mokutarou Kikuta. He agreed to help Kikuta and posed as Yuusaku Hanazawa for marriage interviews with Kaeko Kaneko. During that time, he spoke to Yuusaku in person about his desire to become a flag bearer and questioned if that was truly what he had wanted. Sugimoto also met Tokushirou Tsurumi, Hyakunosuke Ogata, Tokishige Usami, and Hajime Tsukishima, although it doesn't seem that he remembered the names or faces of the men he encountered. After Tsurumi threatened Kaeko's life, Sugimoto confronted him and his subordinates but was stopped by Kikuta. Eventually, his true identity was exposed, but Kaeko was still enamored with him and wanted him as her husband. Feeling like their class difference was too powerful, Sugimoto refused her and instead decided to join the army. In 1903, Sugimoto joined the 1st Division of the Imperial Japanese Army, where he was a member of the White Sash Brigade, that went on at least one night assault. He was one of the few survivors of the platoon and was resting at Port Arthur when Genjirou Tanigaki approached him. Sugimoto asked Tanigaki for some food, and noticed his Akita dialect, which tipped Tanigaki off to the whereabouts of Kenkichi Aoyama. Later, he along with his division, the 7th, the 9th, and the 11th division staged an assault on 203 Hill. During the battle, a Russian grenade was thrown at the Japanese force, but he was able to pick it up and throw it back to the other side where it exploded in a trench, killing several Russian soldiers. When Toraji was dying from his wounds after saving Sugimoto from an explosion, Sugimoto carried his body to a sledge near Mukden so that his wounds could be treated. However, when the 7th Division arrived with a couple of wounded soldiers that needed medical attention, Sugimoto took Toraji's body off of the sledge, telling them that they could use it and that Toraji had told him to "give priority to the ones that can be saved", covering his eyes and cradling his body. After the war, Sugimoto was going to retire and likely be awarded The Order of the Golden Kite, but he got in a fight with an officer and almost beat him to death, which led to him being discharged.")}
