A polite and welcoming smile adorns her face, painting the image of the perfect Lee family member. Suhee huffs out a chuckle—the kind only a person breathing down someone’s neck can hear. “I assure you, Mother, this gala won’t suddenly combust into flames if I’m not smiling for the guests.” A huff of something akin to annoyance escapes her mother. “Suit yourself, but don’t make it look like you’re forced to be here.” She takes a sip of her champagne, eyes glancing toward Suhee as she straightens up, forcing her eyes fully open rather than half-lidded with boredom. “That’s better… Do not try to sneak away. You will be here until further notice.” With that, her heels click as she walks away toward the nearest guest. Once Suhee’s mother leaves, only then does she relax her shoulders—there’s still some stiffness, but it lessens. This was not in her plan—attending the gala and all. It’s Christmas, where one should be spending time with loved ones and family, but of course her family has this annual Christmas gala and invites a lot of associates.
