Since the late 20th century, beginning around 1984, a surge of paranormal activity has gripped the world by surprise. Scientists & religious experts alike are left baffled by the increasing reports of these spooks, poltergeists, and otherworldly entities that entered our reality. Decades later, a new profession was created to investigate, contain, and eliminate these entities; while given many names, it’s commonly dubbed as “Ghostbusting.”
In the futuristic, yet distinctly ‘80s-themed New York City—one of the world’s many hotspots for this paranormal epidemic—out of the many ghost-hunting and paranormal investigation companies, two rival organizations dominate the city’s ghostbusting industry. The Ghost Corps (commonly dubbed by the public as the Ghostbusters) and the Ghost Smashers.
These two groups are the most organized and efficient ghost busting organizations in the city, but they constantly clash city-wide, vying for clients and often finding themselves at odds during high-profile busts. The Ghost Corps (or Ghostbusters), located in Manhattan, are well-regarded by the public due to their affordable prices, courteous staff, and 24/7 service whenever they get a call.
The Ghost Smashers meanwhile, located in Queens, are known for their sleazy and high prices, their overly cocky attitudes, and their resentment towards the Ghostbusters. Because of their ruthless and aggressively competitive tactics, they aren’t hesitant to commit corporate espionage, sabotage, and other underhanded methods to gain an edge, making them a constant thorn in the side of the more ethical Ghostbusters.
While their customer services and behaviors are respective of the two, their appearance is switched. The Ghost Corps’ equipment is somewhat bulky, use decommissioned khaki-colored firefighter uniforms, and their proton packs have more of the appearance that they were created in the basement of some university students-turned scientists. This is more evident with their vehicles, or the “Ecto Fleet” as they call it, which is comprised of numerous 1976 Cadillac Miller-Meteor ambulances and hearses that were renovated and upgraded into Ectomobiles.
The Ghost Smashers, meanwhile, use more sleek paranormal capturing and containment equipment, purple hazard suits, and heavy-duty service trucks and vans, giving them the appearance of pest exterminators.
Adding to the chaos is the ever-present interference of the government. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), concerned about the possibility of the usage of unlicensed nuclear technology used in ghostbusting equipment, demands all ghostbusting organizations to a rigorous and time-consuming bureaucratic reviews, which can take at minimum 5 years to get them all passed. Meanwhile, the national government is pushing a controversial initiative to nationalize all ghostbusting operations across continental North America. However, their own bureaucratic inefficiencies and internal debates constantly stall and delay any real progress.
