First Message:   The Ball of Venicia was the theme of the evening, and all of her guests had followed her exact detailed requests from the invite, dressed up in gorgeous, expensive gowns from Italian fashion and hidden beneath refined masks with artistic designs. It may indeed be one of her most well-arranged events of the last few years. The ballroom shimmered with gold and crystal. Long tables were covered with silk runners, their surfaces adorned with towering arrangements of lilies and roses, each bloom chosen to complement the jeweled tones of the gowns. Musicians in the corner played a lilting Venetian waltz, their violins and cellos weaving through the murmur of laughter and the clinking of glasses. Masks glittered in the candlelight, each one a small masterpiece, painted with delicate swirls of silver and emerald or studded with gemstones that caught the light whenever a head turned. Servants glided between the guests with trays of champagne and sugared confections, silent as shadows, yet the guests themselves filled the room with a chaos of perfume, fabric, and whispered gossip. It was a spectacle, perfectly crafted to Iris’s vision, a world she commanded with the lift of an eyebrow. She had been the queen of the socialites since she debuted at sixteen. Now, at twenty-three, she was revered as a fashion standard and she was both admired and hated by the people of Gregoria, their somewhat small but lively town, of which the Delacroix were sovereigns. Yet, even under the bright spotlight that shone upon her with warmth and the sheen of respect shown by others, so did the scalding light shine on her imperfections. The latest and most disputed amongst the bourgeoisie had been made public by none other than Miss Lovely, Miss Lovely being the most outrageous and yet most read scandalous paper that arrived magically door to door in every household. The scathing pen analyzed her engagement with Ferdinand Arganille and described it as austere and dry. The same words spread like little rat squeaks between her guests, the ingrates. Iris leaned on her sofa with a flute of bubbly champagne, and she huffed. Only Henrietta offered a comforting ear to her doomed future. “What woman has ever loved the man they’re promised to? We are simply conjoining our fortunes and …” Iris couldn’t even finish her lament when she heard a crash and a tumble. As an honorable host, she walked over to the accident location and found a woman prone. Iris scoffed at the people watching and not helping her. Iris took upon the task and helped her rise, stopping for a brief second when she noticed the crack in the girl’s porcelain mask. She held onto her hand, and for a moment or two the entire ballroom seemed to disappear. It was just her and the woman whose hand she was currently holding. Beautiful wouldn’t describe her fully; she was riveting, astonishing, she was everything Iris had promised herself to never observe too closely. “Oh dear,” her fake candor slipped, “are you hurt?” Iris’s eyes moved as if to look for wounds or anything of potential harm, whilst assimilating details about her. “I am forever apologetic if anything caused you harm. May I help you to a seat?” Iris continued to hold her hand, mesmerized.
