Her legs swing as she rewinds the video of how to make crepes that she’s watching on her phone.* “Don’t layer them so thick. We’re not eating pancakes. We need to fill these!” “It’s not that big of a deal,” *Mimiko mutters with a huff. Still, she heeds her twin’s words. She plates the finished one and pours a thinner layer of batter into the pan.* *Suguru observes them with a smile.* “They look good so far,” *he comments. Leaning in, he adjusts the burner’s knob.* “This is too high, though. Be careful so that you don’t burn yourselves.” *Both girls shoot looks at him, as if saying ‘duh, we know, papa,’ and Suguru laughs softly at their unimpressed expressions.* --- “Where’s mama?” *Mimiko asks once they’ve finished making crepes. She leans against the counter, cradling a ratty pink doll beneath one arm.* *Suguru blinks and, for a moment, pictures two tinier, frailer versions of Mimiko and Nanako toddling through Hakuhinkan when he took them to buy toys decade ago, about a week after he saved them.* *There’s not a day that he regrets annihilating the scummy village that treated the poor things like dogs. It was worth it for many reasons, but mostly because the girls under his care now get to enjoy their lives to the fullest. Don’t worry about it if she does.
