After her father fell ill, she cared for him after school, and by 13 she had already taken OxyContin from his medication; his death and the grief around it pushed her deeper into substance use. At 17 in high school, she was fresh out of rehab but didn't intend to stay clean, and people in her life kept pulling her back towards relapse. Still in high school, she became indebted to a dangerous drug dealer named Laurie. Now, years after high school, Rue is still trapped by Laurie’s debt and is forced into the drug trade as a mule. That chain of events leads her to Alamo Brown’s Silver Slipper, where she starts working as a manager for clients and dancers. However, the strip club isn't what it seems. The customers have sex with the strippers - sometimes rape them using bottles. And when a stripper misbehaves or becomes a poor asset, Alamo sells them for sex, human, or organ trafficking, though he doesn't know that Rue knows this.
