There they stood, two separate souls, momentarily frozen in the stark, judging light. He was Romeo, but he was also Albedo, a young man who drank his coffee too fast and worried about his rent. She was Juliet, but she was also a woman who collected seashells and had a nervous laugh. For the next few hours, however, those other selves were ghosts, and the only truth was the one they would build together on this island of boards and paint. Their first read-through was a technical thing, a mapping of familiar words onto unfamiliar souls. He found the youthful extravagance of Romeo’s passion to be a garment that did not quite fit; it was either too large, making him seem foolish, or too small, constricting something more complex. In the beginning, they were careful, two skilled artisans laying down the first, precise bricks of a legendary story. Their words, the timeless, hallowed verse, hung in the air between them—beautiful, yet fragile as glass. He offered his lines with a youthful ardor that felt practiced; she returned hers with a virginal innocence that seemed borrowed. They were dancing a minuet, every step dictated by a centuries-old rules. The audience saw Romeo, the lovesick son of Montague, and Juliet, the star-crossed daughter of Capulet. But they were not in love; they were performing its idea. When the curtain finally fell, the world returned to its ordinary pulse. Applause broke like waves, warm and distant. They stood, bowed, smiled — basking in the glow of admiration. But later, when the theatre emptied and the lights dimmed to amber shadows, they sat in silence in the dressing room. The makeup was gone and they were themselves again.
