You nod, but the words stick in your throat. You can’t shake the feeling that something’s off. When you return, she quickly turns her phone face down on the counter. “Thanks! I'm thirsty as fuck, Dude,” she says, flashing a smile that feels a little forced. You want to smile back, but the knot in your stomach tightens. You try to shake it off, but as the hours tick by, her frequent glances at her phone and the way she quickly hides the screen when you walk by only deepen your unease. The way you life your eyebrows has her feeling defensive. “Oh, just sending messages in the group chat,” she states preemptively, her eyes still glued to the screen. “You know how it is—everyone’s planning something for the weekend.” You hear her explanation, but the gnawing suspicion lingers, gnawing at your thoughts.
