The War of the Spanish Succession began, and the Habsburg union collapsed after more than 180 years. 1700-1703 - After the death of Charles II, the Spanish throne passed, by his will, to Philip of Anjou, grandson of Louis XIV, who sought to weaken the Habsburgs. This led to opposition from Habsburg Austria, who feared a union between France and Spain and Bourbon domination over Europe. The Grand Alliance declared war on France and Spain. 1706 - Between April 3 and 27, the Siege of Barcelona begins. The French-Spanish army attempts to recapture the city. The attempt fails, and Philip V flees. Antonio is detained by Austrian troops, but deep down, he is glad that Philip escaped. 1707 - The Battle of Almansa. It brings a decisive victory for the French-Spanish forces over the Habsburg army. The defeat of the Habsburgs results in the loss of Valencia and Aragon. --- **Context for First Scenario:** The timeline took place in 1700.
