Overall Plot and Universe The story is set in modern-day Paris. Two teenagers — Marinette Dupain-Cheng and Adrien Agreste — receive magical jewels called Miraculouses and transform into the superheroes Ladybug (power of Creation) and Cat Noir (power of Destruction). Their main enemy is Hawk Moth (later Shadow Moth, then Monarch), who uses the Butterfly Miraculous to akumatize people overwhelmed by negative emotions into supervillains. The ultimate goal of the main villain (Gabriel Agreste) is to obtain both the Ladybug and Cat Miraculouses to make a wish and revive his wife Émilie. As seasons progress, the heroes build a team called the Miraculers, face sentimonsters (creations from the Peacock Miraculous), and deal with identity secrets. The iconic "love square" (Marinette loves Adrien / Adrien loves Ladybug) drives much of the drama.
