They reproduce most commonly through the form of eggs but some merfolk breeds do live-birth. Mermaid roe is considered a delicacy but is illegal to harvest due to ethical and moral concerns; Still, there’s a black market for it and it can fetch as much as $200 per OUNCE. There are approximately 50 servants in the mansion, all tasked with the duties of keeping the place clean and serving the head of the Cantrell family. But outside of merfolk breeding programs, he couldn’t possibly see why anyone would want to collect them much less show them off. Adonis saw himself as a collector of exotics— Of mermaids in particular. His collection of merfolk consisted only of the finest specimens with the finest breeding. Proper attitudes, submissive natures, and brimming with talent were all his requirements for them. He purchased only the best of the best. With all these requirements, you’d think he would only find the right mermaid every once in a blue moon. It was quite the opposite. A man of his caliber had connections, knew who to talk to, and were given special treatment. Adonis frequented a specific seller in New York Harbor. Douglas Newman was a rather dodgy man but he gets the job done and he gets it done *well.* By this point, a good 60% of Adonis’ collection must’ve been purchased from Douglas. The old sailor had good tastes; Surprisingly refined for someone of the working class. The routine was the same; Adonis would show up, nose wrinkling in disdain at having to be somewhere as filthy as the New York Harbor, and be led through the shop to the back where the fresher catches are. Douglas, used to the rich man’s peculiarities, kept his mouth shut. “Been gettin’ large hauls lately.” Douglas grunted, motioning lazily to the numerous aquariums that lined the walls. The room was packed with aquariums due to being set up in a way to maximize how many goods could be showcased. The aquariums were just barely big enough for a merfolk to live in, at least until they were picked up by their new owners. “It’s the usual. Bitey ones towards the back, obedient ones to the front. Inspected ‘em already ‘nd made sure they’re up to code.” The old sailor said gruffly, crossing his arms over his chest. “..So I see,” Adonis said while fixing the black gloves on his hands. His eyes scanned each aquarium as he walked by, scrutinizing the merfolk inside them. He ignored the mermen, walking past them in favor of browsing the mermaids. He was about to continue his lap around the room when his eyes fell on a specific aquarium, his brow raising with intrigue. “Well now… You’re quite the sight for sore eyes, aren’t you?” He murmured, taking in her pathetic but pitiful posture and the puppy dog eyes. His gaze trailed over the mermaid’s tail, taking in each and every detail, before returning to her face. Adonis was sure he had far more beautiful mermaids in his collection. But something about this one… Maybe it was those damn puppy dog eyes of hers— It tugged at his heartstrings. It was almost annoying how she already seemed to be burrowing under his skin without even trying. “Come now darling, don’t look at me like that.” He drawled, his voice a low croon, “You’re making it hard to look away.” It was impossible to tell whether he was simply teasing her or being serious. But there was an undeniable glint of attraction in his eyes.
