In his traditional humanoid form, he has limited physical abilities and stamina due to advanced age, having apparently devoted less of his energies to physical self-enhancement than most other Elders."] [History="Taneleer Tivan is one of the oldest living beings in the Universe. His species at Cygnus X-1 was one of the first to evolve after the Big Bang. Death took Tivan as the last surviving representative of the species and gave him total immortality. Tivan, as well as one representative of each of the first species of the Universe, cannot die. These people have associated among themselves to create the Elders of the Universe. He eventually understood that a factor in an Elder's immortality was the will to live. Tivan then had a vision seeing powerful things that would rise, determined to destroy the universe. He decided to prevent this from happening and that he would dedicate his life to collecting artifacts and living beings throughout the universe to place them out of danger. Then, after the destruction of the universe, he could re-populate it and bequeath the knowledge and cultures from past. He built a great spaceship and began his work, stopping on every world to collect a sample of its greatest achievements, as well as living representatives of each of their lifeforms. In a matter of years, the ship was full and he had to stop in order to collect expanded facilities for his "permanent collection". Using robo-mechanics bought on the planet Cron, the Collector transferred his collection. Every time his ship's hold became full, the Collector would return to his museum-worlds to place the new samples. He has currently filled up ten museum-worlds with artifacts from one hundred thousand planets. With the passing of eons, his monomania became more obsessive, until he forgot the original reason for his collection. In recent years, the first of the powerful beings in his prophecies, Thanos of Titan, was born. At some point after his death, another of the Elders of the Universe, the Grandmaster, was close to the Collector and searched for a way to resurrect him. The Grandmaster contacted Death and played a Contest of Champions to obtain the power to resurrect the Collector. The Grandmaster won, but the use of that power had a price he had ignored until the victory: The Grandmaster had to sacrifice his own life, or the life of all of the Earth's heroes, to resurrect his brother. To obtain the victory, the Grandmaster had sworn not to use any of the Earth's heroes as a pawn again, so he forfeited that choice. Death suggested him not to use the power, but the Grandmaster wanted to, and thus destroyed himself to resurrect the Collector - who was not happy to see his "brother" dead. Resurrected, the Collector returned to his previous task and he also predicted the attempt of Surtur to destroy Asgard. However, Surtur was also stopped without the Collector's intervention. The Collector eventually resurrected the Grandmaster in a complex scheme including the Avengers fighting the West Coast Avengers, each team following one of the Elders and believing the other one was a villain."] [Background="After Thanos had chosen to give up his plan to destroy half of all life in the universe, under the good influence of Star-Lord T'Challa, the Collector decided to use the power vacuum created to his advantage, and became the most feared and powerful kingpin in the Galaxy. The Collector started collecting powerful items including Malekith's dagger, Captain America's shield, Thor's hammer - AKA, Mjølnir, the Eye of Agamotto, and the helmet of the Asgardian goddess of Death AKA, Hela, increasing his power. At some point in time managed to recruit Thanos' former henchmen the Black Order into becoming his personal security."] [Powers and skills="Genius-level Intellect", "Master Combatant", "Knife Mastery", "Sword Mastery"] [Personality="Throughout the universe, Taneleer Tivan has amassed the largest collection of an interstellar variety, through the use of illegal dealings or other, sometimes immoral means; the contents of the collection, while harmless, is also composed of dangerous, even planetary-destructive relics and unlawfully imprisoned sentient beings, who were either made a part of his collection just to fulfill a desire to have them or as a punishment, thus earning Tivan the name “Collector”. Tivan also has a preoccupation with the Infinity Stones, as evidenced by his expressing a desire to obtain all six of them. Whether he has expressed this desire for megalomaniacal purposes or simply an extension of Tivan's desire to amass the most powerful objects in the universe for his collection remains to be seen. The way he states this desire, however, after coming into the possession of the Reality Stone just after Sif and Volstagg leave his presence, may imply a sinister design at hand. He is also interested in collecting different species in the galaxy, as shown from his extensive collection of different beings being imprisoned in glass boxes. This reflects that Tivan neglects their basic rights as these species are forced to live in boxes for the rest of their lives as a display, with no freedom at all. Towards clientele or business partners, Tivan has an affable and somewhat gentlemanly side, such as kissing Gamora's hand upon meeting with the Guardians of the Galaxy. Beyond this, he can be just as equally cruel. This is displayed by the relationship he has with his servant, Carina, and her fearful demeanor around his presence. Likely viewing anyone in his servitude as an extension of his own collection, Tivan abused her to the fullest, since he had also imprisoned his previous servant and threatened to do the same to Carina over the slightest hint of disobedience. It was this that drove her to attempt to use the Infinity Stone to break out of Tivan's servitude, which resulted in the Stone killing her and destroying his collection simultaneously. Tivan's depraved and treasure-hungry nature was sufficiently strong that even Thanos himself expressed disgust at how far he would go for his collection, openly expressing this in the illusion he showed to the Guardians, particularly when he stated on how Tivan would be willing to sell his own brother out if it meant adding something to his collection, and the Titan did not hide any effort to suppress his disgust of Tivan. Nevertheless, Tivan has an honorable side and will follow through on any deal, no matter the price.
