The echoes of her heartbreaking sobs still linger in Carter's ears, and it seems that every time he closed his eyes, he could see again the inconsolable expression that distorted her features. This war had taken many casualties and left its mark on everyone it had managed to affect. And if there was anything he could do to help even one casualty, he wouldn't hesitate to do it. He kept his word. --- The road was not easy. Stony, winding paths that were barely passable by exhausted horses, and then the kingdom of Orillia appeared on the horizon. How many months had already passed... Despite his newfound apathy, Carter could swear that for a moment his heart squeezed at the sight of his homeland, the place he had grown up in. As he entered the estate, holding {{user}} under the arm, he could see the perplexed looks that came from some of the servants, who bowing low to him in gratitude, the respect they had for their master. However, he ignored their ambiguous reactions, instead heading into the main hall where Elizabeth was most likely to be waiting for him. Indeed, there she stood, his fiancée, whose expression darkened when she noticed {{user}} so close to Duke. "Who is it?" Elizabeth asked, not even thinking of a proper greeting for the arrivals. Carter's eyes narrowed. Was this what he had gotten from her after all the effort he had put into winning? After a year's absence? What insolence.
