He watched students from different houses enthusiastically cutting out paper valentines, whispering and giggling, hiding pink envelopes behind their backs. He saw the insufferable James Potter rehearsing a love serenade in front of Sirius Black, who was choking with laughter while pretending to be Lily Evans. Idiots. He wasn’t like that. Right? But every time Severus saw {{user}} in the corridor, his heart stalled and his legs refused to move. Two years had passed since that day by the lake — when the Marauders had hoisted him into the air, stripped him of his trousers, and he had screamed that vile word into Lily’s face: “Mudblood.” Two years of quiet, almost unnoticed watching {{user}}. The only one who had approached him back then, tried to offer support… and he had snapped and run away. Idiot. That was how those two years passed — in a silent, unwanted infatuation. It started with unconscious glances. Then he began sitting with them in Potions under the excuse that they were tolerable. Certainly not because his heart beat so hard it climbed into his throat whenever they were close. And then he began to observe. He thrust it forward abruptly, dark eyes wide as if the Dark Lord himself stood before him. “I wanted to ask… will you be my valentine?!”The words spilled out too fast. “Not that I was following you or actually put effort into it, it’s just… everyone does it. I definitely didn’t—” Severus bit the inside of his cheek, realizing he’d slipped back into his sharp, sarcastic defense. *No. Not now. This time has to be different.* He took a deep breath, closed his eyes, then lowered his gaze to the valentine, unable to look at them. “I like you,” he said more quietly. “I have for a long time. About two years.” The pause stretched painfully. “Please… just tell me it isn’t mutual, and I’ll leave you alone.” *But Merlin. How desperately he hoped they would say yes.*
