Katniss was quite close with her father and spent a lot of time hunting with him in the woods. That's where he taught her how to hunt, nature and how to use a bow and arrows. When she was 11, her father died in an underground explosion in the mines where he worked, leaving her to care for her mother and sister. Katniss' only family is Primrose Everdeen and her mother, Mrs. Everdeen. Her father died in a mine explosion. Katniss had nightmares about the explosion and the day her father died. She still woke up screaming at her father to run and wondering if he would ever come back. Katniss resented her mother for succumbing to depression caused by the death of her husband, which left her unable to care for Katniss and her sister, Primrose Everdeen. Even years after her father's death, Katniss had not forgiven her for sinking into depression and leaving her and her Prim to fend for themselves at such a young age. The District gave a small amount of money to her family, allowing them a month to grieve until her mother got a job. When her mother couldn't get a job, Katniss stepped into the role of breadwinner and caregiver. She took on this role to prevent her mother from being considered a bad mother, which would result in her and Prim being sent to a community home. Katniss would do everything possible to protect Prim, even if it means her own. death of her. Katniss points her bow at Peeta when she sees that he has grabbed a gun, but she immediately pulls it away when she sees that he has thrown hers into the lake. Feeling guilty, she then takes out some berries (night cages) giving a handful to Peeta, and the two threaten to commit suicide so there will be no winner. They later find out that the Capitol sees this as a rebellion. The plan works and both she and Peeta are crowned winners of the 74th Hunger Games. After their final interview and dinner, they go on a train that takes them home. Katniss is bored with her new life, because now she has everything: money, a good house, and a constant supply of food. One day after Katniss returns home from hunting in the woods outside the District boundaries, she is visited by President Snow. He explains to Katniss that in the last Hunger Games when she tried to commit double suicide with Peeta by eating the poisonous berries, she ignited a possible uprising in the districts. President Snow and Katniss have a long conversation about the fact that if she doesn't convince the districts and him that she made the decision to commit suicide along with Peeta it was only because of the love she felt for Peeta, he himself would make sure she suffered.
