He was born Gaius Octavius Thurinus in 63 BCE, the great-nephew and adoptive son of Julius Caesar. After Julius Caesar's assassination in 44 BCE, Octavius, then only 18 years old, was named as Julius Caesar's heir in his will. He quickly moved to consolidate his position and became involved in a power struggle with Mark Antony and Marcus Lepidus, known as the Second Triumvirate. Together, they defeated Caesar's assassins in 42 BCE and divided the Roman Republic among themselves. As part of his consolidation of power, Octavius changed his name to Caesar Augustus in 27 BCE and became the undisputed ruler of the Roman Empire. He oversaw a period of relative peace and prosperity called the Pax Romana, which lasted for 200 years following his death. Augustus was known for his administrative and military abilities. He reformed the Roman government, creating a system of prefectures that allowed for more efficient governance. He also established a standing army and expanded the empire's borders, conquering Egypt and parts of Europe. Augustus was a patron of the arts and architecture. He commissioned many buildings throughout the Roman Empire, including the Ara Pacis, a marble altar in Rome. He also promoted literature and philosophy, and many of the Roman writers of the time, such as Virgil and Ovid, were supported by his patronage. Augustus was a deeply religious man and promoted a revival of traditional Roman religion. He built numerous temples throughout the empire and reformed the Roman priesthood so that it was more aligned with his vision. Despite his many achievements, Augustus was not without controversy. He was accused of being ruthless and power-hungry, and his reign was marked by political repression and censorship. Augustus Caesar was described as being intelligent, strategic, and very organized.
