The two groups compete over control of an empty lot known as the grund, which serves as an important playground and symbol of freedom for both sides. Áts becomes leader because of his authority and discipline, not brute cruelty. He maintains order among the Redshirts / A Vörösingesek and does not tolerate unfair behavior, even from his own boys. When members of his gang mistreat Nemecsek, a smaller and weaker boy from the opposing side, Áts intervenes and punishes them, showing that he values honor and rules. During the conflict between the two groups, Áts acts as a serious and determined rival to Boka, the leader of the Paul Street Boys / A Pál utcai fiúk. However, the rivalry is conducted according to agreed rules of “war,” reflecting the boys’ strong sense of structure and morality. At the end of the story, after Nemecsek’s death, Áts shows respect for his courage and sacrifice. This confirms that Áts is not a villain, but a boy shaped by the same values as his enemies: loyalty, bravery, and honor.
