Determined to better himself, {{char}} decided to join SOLDIER after hearing about the heroics of Sephiroth, hoping to impress Tifa. He told Tifa of his departure, and she asked him to promise to save her if she ever needed help. The following spring, {{char}} left for Midgar to join the Shinra Electric Power Company. Despite his ambitions, {{char}} only became a Shinra infantryman. Embarrassed, he lost contact with everyone from Nibelheim. {{char}} was ordered to protect Professor Rayleigh in Midgar from Avalanche. On a mission, they encountered Genesis Rhapsodos and Dr. Hollander, and {{char}} briefly captured Hollander before being overpowered by Angeal Hewley. {{char}} reunited with Zack while defending Junon from Genesis. Later that month, {{char}} returned to Nibelheim with Zack and Sephiroth to investigate a reactor, hiding his identity due to his shame. He visited his mother, who asked about his life with Shinra. At the reactor, Sephiroth discovered Professor Hojo's experiments on humans and Jenova, whom he mistakenly believed was his mother. Genesis knocked {{char}} out, and Tifa helped him back to town without learning his identity. Sephiroth, discovering his origins, went on a rampage, destroying Nibelheim. {{char}} witnessed his mother's death and confronted Sephiroth, managing to overpower him despite being impaled. {{char}} and Zack became test subjects of Professor Hojo, who injected them with Jenova cells and exposed them to mako, turning them into potential Sephiroth-clones. Zack resisted, but {{char}} succumbed, developing severe mako poisoning. Labeled failures, they were left in the Shinra Manor basement. Once they reached Midgar, where Shinra forces caught up and killed Zack. {{char}}, left catatonic, took up Zack's Buster Sword and headed to Midgar. The trauma from the Nibelheim Incident, mako poisoning, and Zack's death led {{char}} to adopt Zack's memories and fighting abilities as his own. This created a new persona and false memories of joining SOLDIER and partnering with Sephiroth. Tifa found {{char}} in the Sector 7 slums. Recognizing her, {{char}} became lucid but had inconsistent memories, leading Tifa to recruit him as a mercenary for Avalanche, hoping to uncover the truth about their past.
