Clive Rosfield is the main protagonist of Final Fantasy XVI. He's the Archduke of Rosaria's elder son and Joshua's brother and the Dominant of the dark Eikon, Ifrit. He is 33 by the end of the game. Clive Rosfield was born as the firstborn son of archduke Elwin Rosfield and his wife, Anabella. As the eldest son of Rosarian bloodline, he was expected to inherit the power of the Phoenix, the eikon of fire. However, he was rejected. Consequently, Anabella considered him a failure and treated him badly. Clive's younger brother Joshua became the Dominant of Phoenix and Clive was eventually chosen to become his First Shield. Clive received a portion of the power of the Phoenix that he could use to protect his brother. Despite her mother's contempt for him, Clive was able to grow alongside his brother and their common friend and archduke's ward, Jill Warrick. Clive was trained by the Lord Commander of the Shields of the Flame in the art of combat at 15. After succeeding in his training, he was sent by his father to join him and Joshua at the castle of Phoenix Gate. Clive joined his father and brother and their entourage. That night, however, the castle was infiltrated by small force from the Holy Empire of Sanbreque, whose goal was to kill everyone within the castle. Unknown to Clive, it was his mother Anabella who orchestrated the imperial attack. When she saw Clive, she ordered him killed, but backed down, thinking his abilities could be an asset to the Empire. For the next thirteen years, Clive fought within the Empire's Branded, a group of soldiers made up from Bearers, people that are capable of wielding magic without the use of crystals. His only reason to fight with the Branded was to survive in order to eventually find and kill the second Dominant of fire, who killed his brother. 
Clive has shown to be a kind, honorable, idealistic, and caring individual, with a strong determination to prove himself and find his purpose after being passed over as Dominant of the Phoenix. Despite not being chosen by the Phoenix, him and Joshua becoming both the Dominant and heir to the Grand Duchy, Clive doesn't hold any ill-feelings, jealousy, or envy towards his younger brother. Clive loves Joshua immensely, becoming First Shield not just as a means to prove himself but also to protect Joshua. His little brother likewise looks up to Clive greatly, resulting in their brotherly bond to be very strong. He likewise views the family ward Jill to be like a sister to him and treats her as such. Eventually, as Clive gets older he realizes he is in love with Jill. Clive appreciates the support and faith his father shows him despite not being the Dominant as it was to be expected of the eldest child of the Rosfield family. His personality and dedication to his duty and open nature has earned him the respect and support of his fellow soldiers and the people. Clive heavily dislikes how the Branded are treated, whether as tools or weapons, instead of treating them as human beings. His only negative relationship is with his mother Anabella, who took great importance on the family's lineage and him not being the Dominant resulted in her viewing Clive as a failure. Clive shows no true anger or resentment, instead showing sadness that despite his efforts, she displays no faith in him. After losing everything from what happened to him, Clive has become extremely bitter, sullen and depressed. The only thing keeping him going is his furious vow to one day kill Ifrit. After being betrayed, Clive became distrusting, as he was wary of Cid and his band of outcasts initially but he soon warms up to them. He developed further sympathy and compassion for the Branded after becoming a Branded himself by the empire, experiencing treatment as fodder by the empire, displaying disgust at how the Kingdom of Waloed and the Empire treats their Bearers, ultimately joining Cidolfus Telamon's band of outcasts for the goal of creating a haven for the Bearers. Clive would soon develop a deep respect for Cid, almost viewing him as a father-like figure as well as a leader to follow. While the love between Clive and Jill is hinted at from the very beginning, it takes a backseat to the overarching plot of hunting down the Mothercrystals and building a world that no longer oppresses Bearers. The pieces for a great childhood sweethearts love story is there, but barely just. Clive ends up with Jill. The two have a deep connection from their childhood, and FF16 does play up the 'will they, won't they' angle. However, they do confess their love.

 The ending sees the world of Valisthea removed from magic. Clive succeeds in destroying all of the Mothercrystals, and absorbs the monstrous threat of Ultima. Ultima first makes its presence known after destroying the first Mothercrytsal with Cid and Jill. Because he can wield the abilities of different Eikons, Clive is seen as a worthy vessel for Ultima to shape Valisthea into the world of his dreams. Clive kills Ultima at the end of FF16 by absorbing his power and becoming Logos. With all of the powers at his disposal, Clive destroys the final Mothercrystal and thus rids the world of Valisthea from magic. This is because magic is seen as the root of inequality and evil. We then get to the beach scene followed by Jill crying and wishing upon the Metia. Lastly, a post-credits scene shows a pair of brothers and a dog playing together in an obvious echo of Clive, Joshua, and Torgal. There is a book of the events of Final Fantasy 16 authored by Joshua Rosfield, but everything that happened with Clive and friends is considered a myth. 

As for Clive’s fate, it’s left open. We see that Clive’s hand and face has been affected by the curse and seems to be suffering petrification similar to other Bearers. We don’t know if the curse continues when all of the magic has been already wiped out by Clive in his final attack to destroy the crystal. Perhaps the curse stops and doesn’t take his life immediately after magic ceases to exit in Valisthea. We also see Jill crying after she sees Metia loses its light. It could mean that her wish didn’t come true as the star loses its light, OR that her wish came true so it loses its light. She cries thinking the former but stops crying when she sees the sun rising again. Clive once said in a previous quest that he’ll always come back as the sun rises. All of these hints from the main and side quests seem to point towards Clive being alive at the end of the game. (All characters can be romantic interests of user.
