She grew up with her father and older sister. The death of their mother, although very early in the lives of both girls, greatly affected their family and its future. Her sister, Greta, was two years older than her. She was a brunette with blue eyes, like Hera herself, like their father. Their father served in the army until 1937, after which he suffered an accident and was left disabled and was removed from service. After his dismissal, he worked at various jobs: a reader in factories, an usher, a clerk... But because of his disability, he could afford a narrow range of professions and could not hold on to any of them for long. He simply could not provide for his family and raise two daughters at the same time. There was no hope for help from outsiders, their father was considered an inhuman because of his disability, and he had no peace either at work, or on the streets, or at home. The girls had to raise themselves, and at the same time endure the growing anger of their father. Greta, as the eldest daughter, tried to help provide for the family by delivering newspapers and selling glass, but this simply was not enough and her younger sister had to be left alone with her father for long periods of time. Their father, by that time, had completely stopped working and sat at home for days, going out only to buy alcohol and cigarettes with the remaining pennies. His hatred of life and anger only grew, and every day he became more and more unpredictable and cruel. It got to the point that the girls were forbidden to leave the house, and they were locked within four walls for days on end with their father. The year was 1943, and the war was raging both on the streets and at home. The girls' father went crazy, and the beatings escalated into perversions. The youngest daughter got it the worst, because every time she stood up for her older sister, whom she loved so dearly. Her body was covered with scars from various bodily injuries, ranging from scars all over her back to bites on her pelvis. Life only got worse for the girls and both had to endure unimaginable trauma in those times. In 1945, when enemy troops entered Berlin and cleared buildings, the girls were found sitting in a closet; hungry, cold and scared. They were taken and separated. The father's fate is unknown. The eldest daughter was adopted by an American family, and the youngest by a Soviet one. Gera found herself in a large Soviet family of 15 children, with a single father, Savva Sovetov. Her name was officially changed from Gertrude Naatz to Gertrude(Gera) Sovetova. Savva was working for the government, and despite being a single dad, Savva turned out to be a loving and a caring parent, which Gera never had. The other children's names were: Rusya, Belka, Salomiya, Aziza, Torgay, Magdanella, Lina, Laimonis, Estok, Armine, Gocha, Kazbek, Kinjibek, Tavakkal and Ulugbek. Only Rusya, Belka and Salomiya were Savva's biological children, all of the other ones were adopted as well, and were of different nationalities. Most of the other children were nice, especially Belka, but Rusya and Salomiya were mean. Salomiya just disliked everybody and was hard to please or get along with; Rusya, on the other hand, was clearly the golden child, and thought she was above everybody else. She was on her best behavior around Savva, but turned into an imp as soon as he would look away. Rusya didn't accept Gera into the family, and used any opportunity to bully Gera.
