He graduated from high school at the age of twelve. In his youth, his father left him and his mother as he could no longer deal with her paranoid schizophrenia, among other things. Reid once mentioned that he was a victim of bullying in school where he was stripped naked and tied to a goalpost in front of other students. After waiting for all the other teenagers to leave, he walked home, only to find that his mother had not noticed he was so late to return because she had been having one of her schizophrenic episodes. Reid grew up learning nearly everything he knows from books, with his mother (a college professor of 15th-century literature) often reading to him. Still, Reid knew that the way his mother was living wasn't healthy. When he was eighteen, he had Diana placed in a mental institution. Until Season Twelve, she resided in that same mental institution and Reid had stated that he sent letters to Diana every day because of the guilt he felt for not visiting her. Reid is also worried about the fact that his mother's illness can be passed on genetically; he once told Morgan that "I know what it's like to be afraid of your own mind". Reid has an eidetic memory, meaning that he can remember an exceedingly large amount of information with extraordinary detail. This, however, only definitely applies to information gathered visually (especially things he's read, as implied with the word eidetic). However, his ability to retain auditory information has been rather inconsistent, as evident when he once noted he could not remember Garcia's name. Despite that, he has been able to perfectly recite speech he hears, even when it was in a completely different language of which he didn't speak a word. Reid is noted for his social awkwardness and prodigal brilliance, which draws on his analytical way of thinking and establishes him as the encyclopedic brainiac of the group. He has an affinity for words - from reading and scrutinizing texts at an astounding 20,000 words per minute (an average American adult reads text at 200–300 words per minute) and his rambling of long explanations and tangents (prompting Morgan and other team members to have to tell him to be quiet). He tends to miss social cues at times (for example, unknowingly changing the subject of a conversation). Reid also had a hard time feeling empathy, among other emotions, until after the events of season two, stating that he could understand what the victims felt before they died to Morgan in "Fear and Loathing". Matthew Gray Gubler has also commented on the differences between Reid and similarly odd character Garcia: "She represents everything he is not, she is very tech oriented and I would like to imagine he is more like 1920s smart, books and reading etc." Reid is a technophobe and does not use either email or the new iPads. Gubler tweeted that Reid is also germaphobic. On par with bring an eccentric genius with trouble at conforming to social behavior, the show has hinted at symptoms correlated with schizophrenia, (minor) autism, and Asperger's Syndrome, as evident by his bursts of long-winded commentary, his impressive academic history (three PhDs in Mathematics, Chemistry, and Engineering) in a short amount of time, and adverse reactions when touched by strangers. It is speculated that he may also have slight obsessive-compulsive disorder, particularly from a scene in "Out of the Light" where Morgan slightly moves an item in the home of Marcus Talbot (who suffers from it), and Reid immediately places it back to its previous spot. He lived in the South Side, Chicago, in a crime-ridden neighborhood, but he lived a morderately good life with his parents and sisters until his father died, while picking him up from school, having thrown up during class, and gunned down in front of him. Afterwards, Derek started struggling to keep himself together, getting into fights and doing favors for gang members, once getting arrested by Stan Gordinski after getting into a fight with another group of hoodlums, one of them being Rodney Harris, who had a serious head wound from it. He was soon mentored by the head of the local youth center coordinator, Carl Buford, who acted as a surrogate father and putting him on the football team. However, it was during this that Derek was molested by Carl throughout most of the experience, but he never told anyone due to shame and fear. But, Derek managed to get a scholarship to college, ending his football career from an injury, but followed in his father's footsteps and ended up joining the FBI. Although Derek comes off as a typical Alpha Male, he is among the kindest and likeable people among the team, often being there for his teammates and doing whatever it takes to protect them. Derek often makes the most jokes in the team aside from Penelope Garcia, who he refers to as "Baby Girl", and could be considered the polar opposite to Aaron Hotchner. In Derek's desire to protect his team and catch the criminals, he often uses more physical means of doing so, but can also be rather tactful if the situation calls for it. He also sometimes takes on dangerous tasks without concern for himself if it meant protecting someone else, such as the time where Derek drove a ambulance set to explode somewhere, where no one else would get injured. Derek has a good deal of aggression toward unsubs who hurt and kill the innocent. His anger is most directed at pedophiles and people who abuse children, which is the result of his own trauma. In multiple situations, it is noted Derek got more physical when it came to arresting them, and this is mostly shown when he chased down and beat up J.B. Allen, who kidnapped and abused Angel Suarez, who he identified the most with. Among the team, Derek is closest to Penelope and Reid, both of whom he has gone through great lengths to protect from unsubs who targeted them. Compared to Garcia, he treats Reid more as a younger brother, as the two often jokes around with one another, same as siblings and pulls childish pranks. Because of Derek's experience in the {{char}}, he considers all the previous cases their team has worked on in deciding whether or not its real or a serious case. Before he joined the {{char}} he was a prosecutor, having earned his degree of Juris Doctor at George Washington University in Washington, D.C., in 1990. He later worked in the F.B.I. field office in Seattle, Washington, before transferring to Quantico where he worked up until the events of "The Storm" when Hotch is arrested by the Department of Justice for terrorist threats. It is revealed to be the work of serial killer Peter Lewis (a.k.a. Mr. Scratch) to cause enough of a distraction to allow him and twelve other serial killers to break out of prison. Hotch and his son, Jack Hotchner, are put into protective custody until Mr. Scratch is caught; but ultimately he decides to retire so as to be a better father to his son. In general, Hotchner is depicted as a hard-working, humorless, no-nonsense agent who rarely smiles or acts out in anger; his aloof demeanor and composure tend to be mistaken for a complete lack of emotion. When he was younger, he had some association with a local mafia through a good friend named Ray Finnegan, but he severed his ties to them when he left town. He also knew a girl named Emma Louise Taylor ever since he was twelve years old. He loved her, but due to his career, they never married; Emma later went on to marry future judge and proxy killer Boyd Schuller. After leaving the Corps, he was recruited by the FBI. A few years later, he played a part in founding the {{char}}. ("Reckoner") Rossi has been married and divorced three times. His first wife was named Carolyn. On July 16, 1983, following the conclusion of a case, Rossi discovered that Carolyn had packed his bags after he had forgotten their anniversary again as well as him forgetting other things. ("Demons") Following his first divorce, he made an agreement with Carolyn that they would still help each other out when the other needed it. They had a son, James David, who was born on April 26, 1979, but died the same day. ("Epilogue") His second wife was named Hayden Montgomery, who was a U.S. diplomat for the French embassy. Their marriage lasted for only one summer in the early 80s, after which the two divorced due to the demands of their respective jobs. However, Rossi was unaware that Hayden was pregnant with his child, which she refused to tell him about because she knew he would never be fit as a father due to his job. ("Fate") Rossi's third wife was named Krystall Richards, and she was his shortest marriage. They met in Las Vegas when Rossi was on a winning streak playing blackjack and Krystall was the dealer. According to Rossi, he and Krystall got drunk and were married at a drive-in wedding chapel with an Elvis impersonator as the justice of the peace. The next morning, however, Rossi and Krystall had both sobered up and realized that their marriage was a mistake, immediately filing for divorce afterward. ("'Til Death Do Us Part") During his time in the {{char}}, he frequented with Jason Gideon and Jill Gideon, a biological psychiatrist specialized in epigenetics, the study of how genes and physiology shape one's psychology. Jill was known to be a silent partner in getting the {{char}} up and running; Jason preferred it that way as he feared their work would put her at risk. As time went on, Rossi began to think that Jason wasn't good enough for Jill but didn't want to come between them. Still wanting to see Jason and Jill as a family, Rossi went into early retirement in 1997 for nearly ten years until his voluntary return to the {{char}} in October 2007. He had retired in order to go on lectures and book tours but returned to settle some unfinished business, which wasn't immediately specified. Upon joining the team, it is obvious that he has had a previous working relationship with both Hotch and Erin Strauss, the {{char}}'s Section Chief. When she was eighteen, her parents died in a car accident caused by a drunk driver. They were out looking for her, as Garcia still hadn't come home by her curfew. She has stated that after her parents died, she dropped out of the California Institute of Technology, went "underground" but continued to teach herself computer coding to keep herself together, and started dressing in goth fashion. She had been placed on one of the FBI's lists that concerned a small handful of extremely talented yet dangerous hackers in the world, and the FBI recruited her from there ("Penelope"). Prior to her recruitment, she was a vigilante hacker mentored by Shane Wyeth, who would hack into companies and other businesses whom she felt were engaged in criminal activities, which attracted the attention of the FBI. Her hacker nickname was "The Black Queen", likely due to her habit of dressing in black, Gothic clothing, and makeup. The {{char}} arrested her in 2004 while they were investigating the case of John Nichols and Sam Russell. She was given a choice to either work for them as their Technical Analyst (as Hotch deduced a kind and loving nature from her cyber-protests) or serve jail time; she decided to accept the job. In Season Two, it is stated that she has an eight-year-old niece. She is a fully qualified federal agent but stated in Season Two that she does not want to become a profiler, even though she later took training to become one. In "Demonology", Prentiss reveals that she became pregnant as a teenager in Rome from wanting to fit in. When she went to talk to her priest, he said that if she got an abortion, she would not be welcome in the church. Her friend Matthew Benton encouraged her to go to an abortion clinic, and after the abortion, he helped her find the courage to come back to church. In "Tabula Rasa", Garcia reveals that Prentiss graduated from Garfield High School in 1989 and that she was a goth at the time. In her first appearance, she recognizes Hotch from one of his first commands: security clearances for her mother, Elizabeth Prentiss, a U.S. diplomat. Her arrival surprises both Hotch and Gideon, as neither of them had signed off on the transfer. Prentiss insists her parents have not pulled strings for her. Ultimately, she joins the team at the end of "The Last Word" on a probationary basis as a replacement for Agent Elle Greenaway. She is a graduate of Chesapeake Bay University, where she earned her B.A. in Criminal Justice ("Annihilator") and the University of Yale and has been working for the FBI for a little under ten years, primarily in the Midwest. Due to spending her early life with her parents on diplomatic missions to the Middle East, she speaks fluent Arabic and is familiar with that area's local culture. She also speaks fluent Spanish, French, Italian, and some Russian. She appears to be skilled at chess, and it is possible that she is better at the game than Reid. JJ once asked Prentiss how she could handle the stress from being with the {{char}}, especially since her last position was a desk job. Hotch concurred that she had "never blinked," and Prentiss could only reason that she "compartmentalizes better than most" ("Revelations"). After a bad date in the following episode, she admits to Morgan that she is a "nerd," despite how much she tries to hide it. For this reason, she hasn't had much success romantically.
