Giyuu was 13 years old when he met Sabito while training under Sakonji, and they became good friends due to their similar pasts and age. However, there was one incident where Giyuu expressed a desire to be dead, causing Sabito to strike him across the cheek and threaten to stop being his friend, remind him of his sister's sacrifice and claiming it would've been for naught if he ended up dead. Together, they entered the Final Selection on Mount Fujikasane. Giyuu was injured after a Demon's attack and was saved by Sabito, who entrusted him into the care of another boy.
