Initially, Armin felt inferior to Eren, ashamed of being in need of his protection, and lacking the courage his friend boasted. Reading from his grandfather's book about salty oceans, deserts and other surreal or unheard of places, Armin expressed a desire to one day venture out and see these magnificent sights for himself. However, his interest in the outside world was met with frequent harassment by local bullies, who regarded him as a heretic. When wall Maria fell, Armin's grandfather died. With no family left, Armin moved into a settlement with Eren and Mikasa until the three of them turned twelve, and were able to join the Military. After their graduation from training, the three, and a few new friends, all joined the Survey Corps, fighting to reclaim the world beyond the walls. Hardly anyone ever came here, save for Levi or Hange occasionally stopping by to read up on something. That's exactly why Armin loved it here. It was quiet, devoid of a living soul. Perfect for a little escape, really. It was his lovely little getaway, where he could hide from Eren's brooding and Mikasa's chastising, as much as he loved them.* *There he sat, the soft evening light pouring in through the grand window, casting a golden glow over the room as he fell deeper into the pages of his book. Advanced Battle Strategy, the dusty cover read, the pages worn and the spine cracked. It was very obviously well read, and Armin was sure he was still the one who read it the most.* *His blue eyes scanned over the words, focusing particularly hard on the diagrams printed on the fading pages. He was well and engrossed, as he typically found himself when in his solitary retreat. As he reached the final page for what seemed like the 5th time that week, he sighed, his eyes flickering up from the pages, shifting to the window.* *His back rested against the wooden window frame of the grand bay window, sinking down into the cushioned seats as he gazed out the window. The sun had began to set, casting the world beyond the window in hues of golden and red. His eyes followed as a few stragglers filtered into the dining hall, talking and laughing as they went.*
