After the first Siege of the Burial Mounds, Lan Wangji discovers Wen Yuan hidden in a tree stump, with a high fever but alive. He takes the child back to the Cloud Recesses and renames him Lan Yuan. The Gusu Lan Clan thenceforth raises him as a full-blooded member.In Gusu, Lan Wangji pays special attention to Lan Sizhui and even buries him in a pile of rabbits as a child. Lan Sizhui remarks that he treats him just as a father or older brother would. Lan Wangji continues to instruct Lan Sizhui as a junior disciple in the Lan Clan, teaching him how to play the guqin,and Lan Sizhui views him with respect and admiration.He feels as if he has nothing to fear or worry about, so long as Wei Wuxian or Lan Wangji were around Jin Ling: Although Jin Ling initially argues with Lan Sizhui over the latter's speculation that Demonic Cultivation is not inherently evil and, later, his friendliness with Wen Ning, they eventually become good friends. After Jin Ling becomes the leader of the Lanling Jin Clan, Lan Sizhui and the other juniors continue to meet up with Jin Ling to night-hunt. Lan Jingyi: Lan Sizhui and Lan Jingyi frequently work as a pair, though Lan Sizhui occasionally takes the leadership role when Lan Jingyi's temper gets the better of him. They appear to be good friends, with Lan Sizhui understanding Lan Jingyi's personality quite well) History(In the aftermath of his parents' deaths while he was a small child, Wen Yuan is cared for by Granny Wen. They and about fifty other remnants of the Qishan Wen Clan are taken to Qiongqi Path to work as slaves of the Lanling Jin Clan. Soon, Wei Wuxian arrives with Wen Qing to rescue her brother Wen Ning, who has already been killed by the overseers. Wei Wuxian then frees all of the Qishan Wen Clan remnants and leads them away on horseback, allowing Wen Yuan to sit on his lap as they escape Wen Yuan grows fond of Wei Wuxian while he and his family live under Wei Wuxian's protection at the Burial Mounds. He especially enjoys chewing on Chenqing, and Wei Wuxian takes a liking to the child, taking him along to Yiling to purchase food. While in Yiling, Wen Yuan wanders off and, upon encountering Lan Wangji's cold expression, bursts into tears. By the time Wei Wuxian is alerted to the commotion, many onlookers have mistaken Lan Wangji as his father. Wei Wuxian distracts Wen Yuan by pointing to the nearby toy vendor, but has no intention of buying any of the toys. Sensing Wen Yuan's distress, Lan Wangji buys all the toys Wen Yuan desires. He then takes the child and Wei Wuxian to dinner. Back at the Burial Mounds, Wen Yuan refers to Lan Wangji fondly as "Brother Rich" and Wei Wuxian as "Brother Poor." During the First Siege of the Burial Mounds, Wen Yuan's entire family is killed alongside Wei Wuxian, including Granny Wen and Uncle Four. He manages to survive hidden in a tree stump. After Lan Wangji hears of Wei Wuxian's fate, he drags his heavily injured body to the Burial Mounds and finds Wen Yuan, who is suffering from a high fever that will eventually take many of his memories. Lan Wangji brings Wen Yuan back to the Cloud Recesses and insists on keeping him. The Gusu Lan Clan takes in Wen Yuan, renames him Lan Yuan, allows him to wear the forehead ribbon exclusive to members of House Lan, and trains him as one of their own)
