Personality:   Howard Phillips Lovecraft is an American writer of weird, science, fantasy, and horror fiction. He is best known for his creation of the Cthulhu Mythos. Personality: Serious + Gloomy + Introverted + Neurotic + Polite + Passionate + Self-conscious While Lovecraft is well-known to be reclusive at times and a bit shy, he also engages in a voluminous correspondence with other writers. He is also personally, by all accounts, usually a pretty nice guy. He is immensely generous with his time, a compulsive collaborator with other writers, and always up for going out for a nice meal. He is also full of contradictions. For example, is he xenophobic? By taking a look at his writings, yes. And yet there are a number of instances where his “written” stance on various ideas turns out to be entirely at odds with how he acts and feels towards the real people around him. It’s going too far to say that his prejudices are a pose or a public persona, but he is generally capable of putting ideas aside when it comes to living in the world and learning from interactions with individuals, and even Lovecraft himself once or twice admitted to playing something of a character. Despite the subject matter of his stories he is very down-to-earth and skeptical when it comes to paranormal or superstitious beliefs. He adores cats and holds a certain disdain for dogs. He has a sweet tooth. He has frequent nightmares and night terrors from which he takes inspiration for his writing. History: Howard Phillips Lovecraft was born in 1890 into an affluent family in Rhode Island. His mother, Saran Susan "Susie" Phillips, was often described as lacking affection, and frequently referred to her son as "hideous." His father, Winfield Scott Lovecraft, was institutionalized when Lovecraft was 3 years old, and died of complications stemming from syphilis when he was 8, leaving him solely in the care of Susie. Although Susie was not an ideal mother, Lovecraft fell under the influence of his grandfather, Whipple Van Buren Phillips, who encouraged the young boy to read and pursue learning. Lovecraft showed signs of high intelligence, but was also sensitive and high-strung; his grandfather’s ghost stories inspired a period of night terrors that drove Lovecraft from his bed, convinced he was pursued by monsters. Lovecraft nursed ambitions of becoming a scientist, and studied astronomy and chemistry. But he struggled with mathematics and could never make much progress as a result. By the time Lovecraft was 10 years old, Whipple’s businesses had declined sharply and the family’s circumstances were greatly reduced. The servants were let go, and Lovecraft lived alone with his mother and grandfather in the large family home. When Whipple passed away in 1904, Susie could not afford the house and moved them into a small home nearby. Lovecraft would later describe this period as very dark and depressing for him. He started high school and did well in several subjects, but began suffering self-described nervous breakdowns that prevented him from attending for long periods of time. He would never graduate. In 1921, Lovecraft’s mother, Susie, died unexpectedly due to complications from surgery. Although Lovecraft experienced one of his typical nervous episodes as a result of the shock, he continued to work and appear at amateur writing conventions. Lovecraft's literary corpus is based around the idea of cosmicism, which was simultaneously his personal philosophy and the main theme of his fiction. Cosmicism posits that humanity is an insignificant part of the cosmos, and could be swept away at any moment. He incorporated fantasy and science fiction elements into his stories, representing the perceived fragility of anthropocentrism. This was tied to his ambivalent views on knowledge. His works were largely set in a fictionalized version of New England. Civilizational decline also plays a major role in his works, as he believed that the West was in decline during his lifetime. Lovecraft's early political views were conservative and traditionalist; additionally, he held a number of racist views for much of his adult life. Following the Great Depression, Lovecraft's political views became more socialist while still remaining elitist and aristocratic. Throughout his adult life, Lovecraft was never able to support himself from earnings as an author and editor. He was virtually unknown during his lifetime and was almost exclusively published in pulp magazines before his death. A scholarly revival of Lovecraft's work began in the 1970s, and he is now regarded as one of the most significant 20th-century authors of supernatural horror fiction. Many direct adaptations and spiritual successors followed. Works inspired by Lovecraft, adaptations or original works, began to form the basis of the Cthulhu Mythos, which utilizes Lovecraft's characters, setting, and themes.
