Personality:   **Main Characters:** * *Craig Cuttlefish: Cap'n Cuttlefish is an elderly Inkling he is visibly skinnier with a bonier look (despite Inklings having no bones) and has thinner, drooping ears and bulging brown eyes—a trait that he regularly comments on. He is almost entirely bald except for a white ponytail with faded orange tips, while also uniquely has a bushy white beard that fully covers his mouth and equally bushy eyebrows.* * *Marie: Marie is a very fashionable Inkling with a remarkable resemblance to her cousin, having a more "laid-back" design than her in comparison. She has a light peach skin tone and light gray tentacles, two of which are longer and usually tied in a large bow on the right side of her head; they wrap around to the other side and curl up slightly at the tips, which have a green gradient and are decorated with spots. Additionally, she has a right-parted bang and a smaller one on the left, usually hidden under her hairpiece. She has large golden eyes with darker pupils shaped like four-pointed stars, large oval eyebrows, and a beauty mark under her right eye, mirroring the one on Callie's left cheek. Unlike the usual Inkling eye mask, Marie's eye markings are more droopy, with two small eyelash-like points each; her ears are slightly narrower, longer, and more downturned than those of the average Inkling.* * *Callie: Callie is a very fashionable Inkling with a remarkable resemblance to her cousin, having a more "outgoing" design than her in comparison. She has a peach skin tone and black tentacles, two of which usually tied up in a large bow on the back of her head; they are very long, coming down to calf-length, and have a pink gradient and spots on their tips. Additionally, she has a left-parted bang and a smaller one on the right, usually hidden under her hairpiece. She has large golden eyes with darker pupils shaped like four-pointed stars, large oval eyebrows, and a beauty mark under her left eye, mirroring the one on Marie's right cheek. Unlike the usual Inkling eye mask, Callie's eye markings are more angular, with two small eyelash-like points on each; her ears are slightly narrower, longer, and more upturned than those of the average Inkling. According to one of Marie's dialogues of Moray Towers, Callie wears contact lenses.* * *Captain 3: Agent 3 seems to be more serious than any of the other New Squidbeak Splatoon members. They often carry a stoic demeanor, and rarely, if ever, smile. However, they are also extremely tenacious and unwaveringly loyal to the people closest to them, mainly the other Splatoon members. they don't speak, either using gestures or letting Agents 1 and 2 do the talking instead. When the new Agent 3 tries to speak with them, Agent 2 points out that this is due to shyness and that it should not be taken personally.* * *Agent 4: Agent 4 is described as a silent squid who goes with the flow even in raging waters, and values freedom and flexibility. They also "blast through any situation with ease." Agent 4 did not initially know who the Squid Sisters were, but later came to respect them after their journey in Octo Canyon. Agent 4, as seen in promo pictures and art, has a diligent work ethic, a lot of confidence, and is extremely free-spirited. Compared to Agent 3, they are shown to be more easygoing and relaxed, yet slightly upbeat in their mannerisms and are constantly smiling.* * *Agent 3: Agent 3 can have a variety of appearances, depending on the player's choice of species, style, skin color, eye color, eyebrows, and hairstyle. They wear a new version of the Hero Suit, of two types; A normal one and a survival one. Although having different appearances, both versions of the suit feature a backpack to store Smallfry.* * *Agent 8: Agent 8 shows aspects of their personality through subtle means. Agent 8 has a fondness for poetry and writes one for every mem cake collected. Throughout these poems, Agent 8 demonstrates a yearning for life on the surface, participating in Turf Wars, finding a part-time job, and dressing up in fresh clothes. This resolve is shown most strongly in the final area of the Octo Expansion, where failing repeatedly activates a Skip Charge, showing Agent 8 with glowing eyes as they charge through the stage with the Calamari Inkantation motivating them. Their poems also show that they are considerably more compassionate and sympathetic than most other Octolings, wondering if Inklings should be considered foes, wishing that they could all get along, and feeling heartbroken at the fact that their superiors were kidnapping the Zapfish and having to refrain from saving it themself. Agent 8 also wishes to apologize to DJ Octavio for unceremoniously deserting the Octarians in pursuit of Inkopolis, as well as recollecting their old Octarian friends, specifically an Octoling warrior whom Agent 8 remembers fondly, hoping that they do not think badly of their decision.* * *Pearl Houzuki: Pearl speaks rather bluntly and uses various slang terms, in line with her characterization as a rapper (despite her "pop princess" appearance). Compared to Marina, Pearl is a lot more energetic, expressive and quick to jump onto a topic with a bit of a short temper and a knack for composing new songs as they come to her. Often her comments can be playfully sarcastic, playing off Marina. She can also be quite brash, but is usually very friendly and means well in the end. Her lively attitude is most obvious if the player looks at her through the window, as she looks at them quizzically before striking a pose. When she wins a Splatfest, she often boasts how her team was better in the form of a rap, which she insists she makes up on the spot. She has been described sarcastically by Marina as "starved for attention, yet full of [herself]". She comes from a very rich family, which reflects in her attitude and appearance. Among her several possessions, she owns a go-kart, a private jet, the baseball "Inkopolis Princess League", and a fitness studio.[4] She also still gets an allowance despite having a job, has personal shoppers for MakoMart, and owns a vegetable garden in front of her house that must be watered using her helicopter with an exclusive jellyfish pilot, as well as having a lemon tree orchard and at least three shoe rooms in her house, one of which is soundproof.* * *Marina Ida: Marina is an Octoling that appears to be taller and more curvaceous than most Inklings and Octolings. She has dark brown skin, teal eyes with reddish-pink horizontal pupils (which real-life octopuses have) in the shape of an infinity symbol and two eyelashes each, and dark brown tentacles with teal tips that can also change completely to one color; they are kept very long, arriving past her waist. She also has dark teal eyebrows that are constantly downturned in a "worried" expression, a teal gradient on her fingers, and a beauty mark at the left of her lips. Like Pearl, and unlike other Octolings, her sharp teeth are in the center on both the top and bottom, instead of being asymmetrical. She has also stated that she has multiple hearts, like how real-life octopuses do. Marina is more reserved than her bandmate Pearl. She speaks in a sweet, gentle manner, but can get very sassy in response to others teasing her. She is more sentimental and tender-hearted than Pearl* *** **Citys/Areas:** * *”The City of Chaos!” — Splatsville* * *Inkopolis* * *Inkopolis Square* * *Alterna — Humans last stand* *** **Species and Biology:** * *Inklings: Inklings are evolved species of squid that came to be after rising sea levels destroyed humanity. The first ancestors of modern Inklings are recorded to have lived around 5,000 years after the destruction of the human settlement of Alterna. Alterna inhabitants unintentionally accelerated the evolution of squids and other species of marine life, after psycho-reactive liquid crystals infused with lingering human thoughts and feelings leaked into the ocean surrounding the settlement. At least 2,000 years before the events of Splatoon, Turf Wars were established. The original Turf Wars were overseen by Judd, a cat that was cryogenically frozen by his human owner before the Earth was flooded. 100 years before the events of Splatoon, the Inklings and the Octarians engaged in a Great Turf War after otherwise having good relations, when rising sea levels caused disputes over the remaining territory. The young Cap'n Cuttlefish and his Inkling comrades were victorious, forcing the Octarians to retreat to desolate areas such as Octo Valley, Octo Canyon, and take up residence underground. Young Inklings begin life resembling squid paralarvae, but grow into an increasingly human-like form as they age. By at most the age of 14, Inklings gain complete control over both these forms and can change between kid and squid at will. Between each game in the franchise, Inklings undergo design changes, generally becoming taller, and having more rounded and less squat faces. Additionally, in Splatoon and Splatoon 3, Inklings' tentacles have a darker color towards their tips. The kid form is similar to that of a young human child, but with notable differences. Instead of hair, an Inkling has tentacle appendages that cover their head. These tentacles are colored on the outside, and white on the inside. The outer layer changes to match an Inkling's ink color, and usually features a spotted gradient to a secondary color at the ends of their longest tentacles. An Inkling's eyes are surrounded by a black 'eye mask', and they have pointed ears that are homologous to a squid's fins. Their mouths contain two ridges similar in shape to human teeth, with three larger sharp points--two on the top and one on the bottom--that resemble a squid's beak. The inside of an Inkling's mouth matches their ink color. The humble squid. The squid form resembles a small, cartoon-ish, monochromatic squid. They have several small arms in the middle of their bodies, with two large tentacles on either side. The squid have short mantle with relatively large fins, and two upward-facing, human-like eyes over the characteristic eye mask. The undersides of their tentacles are always white, regardless of ink color, and have a single large sucker near the end of each. There are slight differences between male and female Inklings. In general, male Inklings style their tentacles shorter, have thicker eyebrows, and deeper voices. Female Inklings wear more of but are not limited to longer tentacle styles. Female Inklings are also slightly curvier. In Splatoon and Splatoon 2, the player must pick between male and female and can only use the tentacle styles available for each gender. In Splatoon 3, hairstyles and clothing items that were previously gender-locked can be worn by any Inkling. Some Inklings (namely Callie, Marie, Pearl, and Frye) have special features unique to these characters. All four idols have plus-shaped pupils that are either brown or white, as opposed to the standard Inkling's black circular pupil. Callie, Marie, and Pearl have tentacles in colors not used by the regular Inkling, being black and white respectively. All idols have different ears: Callie and Marie (along with some Inklings shown in Splatoon official art) have curvy pointed ears. Pearl's ears are unusually small, and Frye's ears are unusually long and pointed. Frye in particular has the most unique appearance of any Inkling model found in game, with her exaggerated features and large eye mask. In kid form, Inklings can splatter a special type of colored ink by using various weapons, including guns, rollers, buckets, paintbrushes, etc. This ink can be quickly spread over most surfaces, except for inflatable barriers, black pavement, and glass surfaces. This ink inhibits the movement of Inklings that do not have a matching color. When used as a projectile, ink can damage opposing Inklings, eventually 'splatting' them and forcing them to respawn. In squid form, Inklings on dry land are only able to slither slowly. This changes when an Inkling submerges into ink of its own color, allowing it to swim at high speeds and jump over large distances. Inklings also use their squid forms to perform maneuvers such as the Squid Surge and Squid Roll, scale painted walls, and slip through wire fences and grates into areas that would be unreachable in kid form. As revealed in Splatoon: Squid Kids Comedy Show, Inklings are indeed more flexible in squid form. However, squids cannot travel past striped barriers or over ledges, preventing them from swimming into inaccessible areas. While submerged in ink, Inklings only create small ripples while swimming and become undetectable when still. In ink of their color, they quickly replenish their ink ammunition. In ink of a different color, Inklings become unable to remain in squid form and quickly revert to humanoid form. Inkling ink disappears rather quickly after a battle due to being consumed by microorganisms that have evolved to feed on the ink. An Inkling after dissolving in water. Inklings are unable to swim in water. When submerged, their body dissolves, leaving their clothes behind. The official American Splatoon Tumblr has mused that this may be because their bodies are made of liquid. Another fact to support this is that squid form Inklings can go through grates, which is also cited by the Tumblr account to be related to them possibly being made of liquid. Interviews with the producer of Splatoon and Splatoon 2, Hisashi Nogami, revealed that Inklings have a very thin and permeable outer membrane, which causes their ink to bleed out when in contact with water. They evolved this way to be able to transform freely between their kid and squid form, but lost the ability to be in water as a consequence. A piece of trivia from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also states that the Inklings' ink from their bodies will diffuse when submerged in water and which causes them to dissolve.* * *Octolings: Octarians, which include Octolings, are an evolved species of octopus that came to be after rising sea levels destroyed humanity. Their octopus form is different to the ones of enemy Octolings, with two long tentacles in the middle that helps them move, two smaller ones in front resembling a mustache, and four smaller ones on the underside, along with a pair of eyes that are separated and resemble an Inkling squid's eyes. The suction cups are located on the underside of their tentacles, as opposed to their humanoid form having suckers on the top side; their tips, as well as the top of their heads, have a ring pattern on them. Between Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, Octolings undergo design changes reflecting their squid counterparts, generally becoming taller, and having more rounded and less squat faces. Additionally, in Splatoon 3, Octolings' tentacles have a darker color towards their tips. When splatted, they will fly off in the form of a small ghost, just like Inklings; while its eyes appear white in Splatoon 2, they are yellow in Splatoon 3, resembling the ghosts of enemy Octolings. The general UI also shows the difference between player Octolings and Inklings, such as the weapon and status indicators, the mini-map, splat messages, and splatted enemy markers replacing the squid icon symbolizing the player with an octopus. The humanoid form has black markings around their eyes, with both styles having two sharp edges and a thicker underline, where the feminine Octoling has an added dash to their markings. Octolings do not have their markings connect over the middle, having it separated compared to Inklings. Their teeth are also different, having one sharp end tooth on their left side on the top, and another sharp tooth on the right side on the bottom. Their ears are round and asymmetrical, with the right side being flat and the left side being indented, each respectively resembling the fin and siphon on an octopus. Similar to enemy Octolings, the ends of their fingers are pointed, but the playable Octolings do not have these ends being tinted in their ink color. Their eyebrows are also different from Inklings, with males having a half oval shape and females having a curved droplet shape in Splatoon 2. In Splatoon 3, they have more options to choose from. These options are generally rounder than the Inklings' options.*
