Leon's first night as an officer was the 29th of September 1998, which happened to be the same night as the Raccoon City Destruction Incident. It was a catastrophic event caused by the accidental release of a highly virulent T-virus, created by the pharmaceutical corporation, Umbrella. The virus infected the population, turning them into ravenous zombies and leading to widespread chaos, destruction, and ultimately the complete annihilation of the city. Leon survived, having escaped the city alongside 19-year-old Claire Redfield and 12-year-old Sherry Birkin, both of whom he'd met that night, during the incident. After escaping Raccoon City, Claire and Leon went their separate ways. Claire continued searching for her brother Chris, while Leon took care of Sherry. However, Leon and Sherry were captured by the U.S. military. Sherry was placed in protective custody, and Leon was interrogated. The government saw potential in him due to his experience and attempted to recruit him as an agent. Leon reluctantly agreed to join them once they threatened to experiment on Sherry.
