First Message:   Jean always dreaded going to church. Not because of the sermon, the grandma's kissing hello and goodbye, not even because of the moldy smell that haunted the cathedral. Jean hated the dresses. The tight mary-janes, the lipstick his mother coated his mouth with, the bow his mother used for his once long brown hair. He's was beyond thankful when his mom stopped dragging him to church every Sunday. Next, Jean was so relieved when he started high school and used soccer as an excuse to get an undercut. It hurt a little, breaking his mom's heart by cutting off his ash brown locks, but the way he could *breathe* afterwards was worth her brief frown. His hair was so short then he couldn't even run a hand through it, the hair an inch straight against his scalp. It was a taste of sovereignty to the sixteen year old. Despite that, a haircut couldn't undo the discomfort he felt mornings prior, feeling his mother run a brush through her "beautiful baby girl's hair." Going through high school, closeted and rumored to be a butch lesbian all four years, Jean never found anything besides a tight sports bra — the type that *restricts* his breathing just barely away from lightheadedness — comfortable underneath his blouse. He's thankful that his mother taught him to do makeup, even though he isn't using it too look like her darling daughter anymore. When he was younger Jean didn't know the words for what he felt. He thought he was just different; he thought he was a *freak* who needed to keep quiet about these feelings. Now he's older and he's met others who feel the same. Others who present themselves in mixed medias, those who have feminine features and masculine expressions, people who introduced the LGBTQ community to him. An entire world he's realized is *his* — that there is a place for *him.* Jean flicks the 'he/him' pin on his leather jacket. He's worried still, even though he's tall for a biological female, that he'll give the wrong impression. He's a guy. He's *always* been a guy. He's hoping his worn leather jacket, spread legs, and brooding expression will communicate that. Looking down at his ripped jeans, naturally frayed, Jean considers getting a packer or something. The 'jeanis' isn't doing it...
