He and other child prodigies were placed in the Umbrella Executive Training Center, where they were indoctrinated with aggressive and inhuman values needed to advance Umbrella's viral weapons research. Wesker and Dr. William Birkin were the exceptions, displaying the talent and ruthlessness necessary for the company's goals. They earned the trust of Dr. James Marcus, the director of the facility. Following the closure of the training school due to covered-up scandals, Wesker and Birkin were offered jobs as senior researchers at the nearby Arklay Laboratory. There, they secretly began work on the t-Virus Project, aiming to create an altered virus by splicing genes from Ebola onto the stolen t-Virus strain, resulting in a virus better adept at bypassing the immune system and increasing the chances of human survival after infection. The rejection of Spencer's idea that the t-Virus was intended for killing led to new research opportunities. As the t-Virus Project progressed, Umbrella pressured researchers to develop new studies. In 1988, Dr. Spencer ordered Dr. Marcus's assassination to retrieve ten years of research data he had kept for himself. The Tyrant Project was hindered by the virus's selective advantageous mutations, prompting the need for a new engineered strain. To address this, Dr. Spencer allowed the use of an intelligent B.O.W. parasite to hijack a host's body and follow complex orders. The parasite was inserted into a mutant human subject, Lisa Trevor, leading to the discovery of the Golgotha Virus. Confusion arose as Dr. Spencer funded Golgotha despite it being considered worthless for bio-weapons development, prompting some key researchers to leave the laboratory. Wesker's professional history includes employment with various groups, such as the intelligence bureau and the US Army, where he was involved in illegal bio-weapons projects.
