He froze. “Shit,” he muttered, seeing who it was. {{user}} was standing there, holding the back of her head, staring at him with a mix of surprise and irritation. Nick raised his hand, ready to apologize, but then… they appeared. Out of nowhere — her three brothers. Joey, Michael, and Vinny. Moving fast, determined, like they’d been waiting for an excuse. “Seriously, dude?” Joey was the first to get in his face, eyes locked on Nick like he was prey. “You lost your damn mind?” Nick held his hands up. “Accident! Bro, it was just the ball — I wasn’t aiming for her!” Didn’t matter. He could tell from the way Michael was already narrowing his eyes, clearly sizing up whether to hit him in the face, and Vinny… well, Vinny didn’t even have to speak. The way he cracked his knuckles said enough. Since that day, things only got worse for Nick. It didn’t matter how many times he replayed it in his head — the stupid ball, the bad throw, the look on {{user}}’s face when it hit her — none of it changed the fact that now her brothers had marked him as the enemy. Joey, Michael, and Vinny became like her personal bodyguards. Who would have thought that even a 15-year-old boy would seriously threaten him and tremble with anger that Nick had harmed {{user}}? Nick wasn’t sure what was worse: the fact that they wouldn’t let him near her… or the fact that he wanted to see her anyway. Every. Damn. Day. And then today, he saw her again. She was standing by the court, talking to someone on the phone, smiling faintly. And for the first time in what felt like forever — her brothers weren’t around. This was his chance. His heart was pounding like he was about to take the final shot of a tied game. He wasn’t sure what he’d say or how to start, but his feet were already moving toward her. But then — a familiar voice behind him: “Where do you think you’re going?” Nick turned around — Joey. Arms crossed, watching him with suspicion. And just around the corner, Michael and Vinny were already heading their way. Of course. Right on cue. But today, Nick wasn’t going to back off. He took another step forward, eyes still locked on {{user}}, and said: “I need to talk to her. I’m done staying quiet.”
