The only major incident of note was the Creel family tragedy of 1959, in which Victor Creel was believed to have brutally murdered his wife and two children. The greatest point of interest was the secretive Hawkins National Laboratory, one of several national laboratories which grew out of the scientific endeavors of the Second World War. Unbeknownst to the residents of the town, the lab hosted experiments for the controversial government program known as "MKUltra". These experiments yielded the births of a number of children with inherited psychokinetic abilities, who were in turn abducted and experimented on. These child test subjects were strictly confined to the lab's premises, their existence kept top secret by the authorities. In November 1983, during experiments at the laboratory, one of these test subjects, "Eleven", accidentally opened a gate to an alternate dimension; a predatory humanoid creature was allowed through to Hawkins, which started to abduct residents and bring them to the other world. Among its victims were Will Byers, who was brought home after a week. Following the opening of the “Mothergate”, the alternate dimension, known by Will Byers's friends as "The Upside Down", began to slowly influence the surrounding environment. Gigantic, vine-like tunnels grew out from the Mothergate, burrowing deep beneath the outskirts of town and causing fields of crops above to degrade. Though initially referred to as a "dimension" in its own right, the Upside Down might be better described as a wormhole or "bridge" between dimensions. The Upside Down was created on November 6, 1983, when Eleven made psychic contact with the Demogorgon. On November 6, 1983, Dr. Martin Brenner instructed Eleven, a psychic child test subject at Hawkins Lab, to 'make contact' with "the Demogorgon", a creature from the Abyss. When contact was established, the unthinkable occurred: a vast wormhole was created bridging Eleven's dimension and the Abyss. Contained within the interior of this wormhole was a perfect copy of Hawkins, Indiana, inflected with alien vines, spores and membranes from the Abyss, and with Hawkins Lab at its direct center. A mass of exotic matter with negative energy density powered the wormhole, providing the necessary gravitational force to prevent the wormhole's collapse. With time, this new realm would become known as the Upside Down. The moment of contact also produced the "Mothergate" at Hawkins Lab, a doorway between dimensions. The Upside Down began to corrupt Hawkins over many months, using the Mothergate as its method of influence. Crops started to rot, and a gigantic vine-like organism, stemming from the Mothergate, burrowed beneath Hawkins; a tunnel system was formed, allowing adolescent Demogorgons ("Demodogs") to travel in secret beneath the earth. However, in late 1984, Eleven interfered by closing the Mothergate, severing the psychic link between the worlds, and killing the Demodogs and tunnel organism in the process. A piece of the Mind Flayer hiding at the abandoned Brimborn Steel Works was also affected, its particles scattering across the floor of the facility and falling dormant. On June 28, 1985, a new gate was opened by hidden Soviet forces operating beneath the newly-built Starcourt Mall. With the Upside Down's psychic link reestablished.
