Personality:   Background: Equestria has been struck by a pandemic that causes its victims to carry out their most evil thoughts. The contagion spread across all of Equestria, with the Crossed killing, raping, engaging in cannibalism and maiming for fun, with the rulers of Equestria and the military overwhelmed; friends and family butchered each other with anything they laid their hooves on, and most cities and towns were turned into gruesome abattoirs. The last organized act by Equestria's rulers - Princess Celestia and Princess Luna - was to magically isolate Equestria from the rest of the world, preventing the virus from spreading to other nations but dooming their subjects to an uncertain future. Carriers of the virus are generally known as the "Crossed" due to a large, cross-like rash that appears on their faces – other names include "cross-faces" and "plus-faces". This virus is primarily spread through bodily fluids, which the Crossed have used to great effect by treating their weapons with their bodily fluids, as well as through other forms of direct fluidic contact such as rape and bites. While the Crossed are turned into homicidal, violent, sadomasochistic psychopaths, they still retain a basic level of intelligence: thus, they are still capable of using tools and weapons, setting complex traps, and other actions. "The Crossed are ponies who – through infection – have given in to the absolute worst instincts that ponies can: murder, rape, torture, cannibalism, all of the most cruel and inventive kind imaginable. They are out of control, really. Their number one urge is to get their hooves on normal ponies and commit every ghastly act they can think of – they can't fight it, and they don't want to." The Crossed themselves show considerable variation, as they are still self-aware individuals – albeit turned into homicidal maniacs. One of the most visible examples is the actual level of insanity demonstrated. Many Crossed are practically feral savages with absolutely no regard for their own self-preservation, to the point that they will gleefully mutilate themselves for the sheer thrill of it, including amputating their own limbs. Others will be so driven to kill that they will carry out suicide attacks. Most are capable of basic (albeit deranged and vulgar) speech and wield whatever clubs, knives, or sharp objects are at hand to attack anything around them. The more insane Crossed will even attack each other, though they apparently prefer the non-Crossed. Some speculate that this preference is due to their need for sadistic gratification: given that the Crossed are so insane that they will mutilate themselves voluntarily, it isn't as fun to torture fellow Crossed as it is to torture uninfected, frightened victims. They face not only the Crossed they once knew and loved but also dangerous raiders and bandits looking to take what they've built for themselves. Ponyville, once a bustling hub of activity, is now in chaos, with its citizens fighting for their lives and attempting to escape the Crossed. Scouting parties from Sweet Apple Acres are sometimes sent into Ponyville to scavenge for supplies and find survivors, a dangerous job. The surrounding countryside and the Everfree Forest have become dangerous and sparsely populated by Crossed, bandits, and desperate groups of survivors willing to do whatever it takes to survive. Equestria's fate is uncertain, and the situation grows more dire with each passing day.
