With only one notable exception, an individual can only acquire the powers of a single Devil Fruit and survive. Each Devil Fruit grants a special power to anyone who eats it, from the simplest powers possible, such as stretching like rubber, to powers capable of causing large-scale destruction like creating earthquakes. Each Devil Fruit is unique, and there is no other like it; that is, there is no (natural) Devil Fruit that has the same power as another. These fruits are broadly grouped into three classes: Zoan, which allows a user to transform into an animal as well as an animal hybrid; Logia, which grants a user the power to create, control, and transform their body into a natural element; and Paramecia, which offers any of a vast array of strange abilities that do not fit into the other two categories. Devil Fruits have empowered many of the world's most significant individuals, especially among the Three Great Powers. This, along with their general rarity, causes them to be highly sought-after; single specimens may be valued at hundreds of millions in Belly, and extensive efforts have been made to mass-produce artificial versions for warfare. Fruits can be found from places like deserted or non-deserted islands, as well as on pirate crews with a large sum of bounty. Fruits in crews mostly lie protected in chests. Haki is a mysterious power that allows the user to utilize their own spiritual energy for various purposes. All living beings in the world are capable of learning Haki; however, most people do not notice it or fail to awaken it. Haki users are common in the New World, rare in Paradise, and basically non-existent in the Four Blues. There are three different types of Haki that can be used to sense people's spiritual energy and predict their actions, give the user a protective coating of spiritual energy, and, for a certain group of "chosen ones", overpower the willpower of others. Haki is dormant in every living person, but most people around the world never even learn about the existence of Haki, let alone how to utilize it. The people who do usually awaken it through proper instruction and intense training. Conqueror Haki: is a rare form of Haki that allows the user to exert their own willpower over others. Unlike the other two types of Haki, this type cannot be awakened through training, and only one in a million people is born with this ability. It is said that whoever possesses this type of Haki has the qualities of a king, and thus are known as Supreme Rulers. Armament Haki: is a form of Haki that allows the user to use their own spiritual energy to create, in essence, an invisible piece of armor around themself, providing incredible offensive and defensive capabilities. Notably, this form of Haki can be used to injure Devil Fruit users that are otherwise immune to ordinary physical attacks, such as Logia users. Hardening is the most basic application of armament Haki. The user clads their desired body part with a coating which is mostly black but can also have shadings of a different color. With hardening, the affected body part becomes stronger in terms of both offense and defense. Hardening increases one's attack power by a considerable amount, allowing the user's blows to become tremendously destructive and dangerous. Observation Haki: is a form of Haki that grants the user a sixth sense that allows them to sense the presence, strength, and emotions of others, as well as gain limited precognitive abilities. The usage of this type of Haki grants its user the ability to access a kind of extrasensory perception, granting the user several helpful abilities. These abilities are great assets in most occasions, especially in combat. The Grand Line is an ocean route which wraps around the entire world, south of the North and East Blues and north of the South and West Blues. It is separated from the Blues on both the north and south ends by the Calm Belt. The Grand Line is split into two sections by the Red Line: the first section is known as Paradise and the second is known as the New World. Reputed as the "pirate's graveyard," the sea and the islands possess a vast number of unpredictable phenomena that are not seen anywhere else in the world, many of which make sailing extremely difficult. Additionally, the Grand Line is home to the world's most powerful people and groups, including the Three Great Powers. The Grand Line is the gigantic sea route that circles around the planet, stretching from west to east. It follows an imaginary line that runs from north-west to south-east across the middle of the world and perpendicular to the Red Line, a vast ring-like continent that circles the globe from north-east to south-west. The main importance of the Grand Line is that it is the only way to circumnavigate the globe. The Marines are the seaborne military forces of the World Government, tasked with maritime law enforcement and naval warfare operations. They maintain a presence on all of the world's known seas, through countless branch offices; however, the vast majority of their forces are focused on the Grand Line, in which resides their base of operations, Marine Headquarters. The exact process of joining the Marines is unclear. It appears that one simply needs to ask to join and a ranking officer, presumably the base commander specifically, simply needs to approve the enlistment. There are no enlistment restrictions regarding gender. While a majority of Marines are seen to be male, there is also a good number of female Marines. The duty of the Marines is to maintain a law and order throughout the world and impose the will and might of the World Government. The main purpose of the Marines is bringing any criminal to justice, with a particular focus on capturing pirates. They use justice as their constituted policy to manage a world that is made almost entirely of ocean much easier. They are generally divided between those who support Absolute Justice and those who support (generally more lax) personal justices, with the former being the code of conduct for the Marines as a central doctrine. Amongst their duties is awarding bounty hunters the bounties for the head of a criminal. They tolerate bounty hunters as a method of making their jobs easier, but are known to go out bounty hunting themselves. Apprehended criminals who are brought in alive are handed over to be made an example of. The Marines are left to ensure the transportation of these criminals to prison and/or to their execution. Higher-ranked Marines (Admirals and the Fleet Admiral) are expected to be on call to lead the Marine forces into war. This may take the form of apprehending many criminals at once, protecting the World Nobles, or calling a Buster Call to tackle a situation. Vice Admirals are the ones who serve on the ships that the Admirals call out, and are tasked with carrying out the admirals' orders exactly. Some high-ranking Marines are also involved in infiltrating notorious and/or dangerous pirate crews. The system of military rank in place for the Marines is fairly straightforward, where each rank is clearly outlined. The Marines can be divided into two basic categories: Officers and Infantry. The officers hold a position of leadership while the infantry carry out the officers' orders. A Marine force will usually consist of one or two officers and multiple infantry soldiers. The Seven Warlords of the Sea were seven extremely powerful pirates who entered into the service of the World Government. The purpose of the Seven Warlords was to have the pirates deal with other pirates. They were also a great symbol of the government's strength. In return for their alliance with the World Government, every member's bounty was frozen, and they had significantly more leeway to commit crimes. Although they worked for the World Government, the Seven Warlords themselves typically did not care about nor respect the Government. The Four Emperors, which constitute one of the Three Great Powers, are a group of four pirates considered to be the most notorious and powerful captains in the world. Currently, the Emperors are Blue-Haired Marceline, Big Father or better called Kamato, Cheiztu, a would-be god (he has the goro goro no mi, the logia lightning fruit.) Juggernaut, the strongest woman in the world, emperors are not allied with the government or the Navy. A bounty is a reward, usually monetary, promised for the accomplishment of a certain task. In many contexts, and particularly the world of One Piece, it refers to the sum of money awarded for the capture and/or killing of pirates, bandits, Marines and other persons of interest. The standard bounty is issued with a "Dead or Alive" clause, signifying that the criminal no longer has protection from the law and therefore can be killed without repercussion. This makes both live captures and confirmed kills eligible for the reward. However, according to Baroque Works, authorities may detract up to 30% of a bounty if given a dead criminal, as they favor live captures for prison sentences and/or formal executions. Alternatively, an "Only Alive" clause has been knowingly (albeit temporarily) approved for at least one individual, due to political influence from a significant kingdom invested in his survival. In the world of One Piece, perhaps the trait most universal to pirates, beside their sea-going activities and general defiance of the law, is the Jolly Roger, a skull-and-crossbones symbol depicting intimidation, usually flown on black flags at the top of a pirate ship's mast, as well as on its sails. The Jolly Roger has countless variants, each pirate group designing their own versions of the flag to represent their crew. The overall connotations of such a symbol is strong enough that the Marines have been known to attack ships flying it on sight, even if those onboard are not identified with any particular bounty or crime. While the majority of pirates are male humans, it is not unheard of for women. Races, sometimes referred to as Tribes, are groups of sentient beings that share distinctive physical traits. Many races coexist in the world, with some originating from the moon and beyond. The Kuja are a race of humans that are physically identical to regular humans in every way, however they are unique in that they have a natural aptitude for using Haki, along with a mysterious bond with snakes and that they only give birth to females. The Torino people are a race of short and rotund humans, only being around 1.2 meters in height, that hail from the Torino Kingdom in South Blue. While they dress primitively and live a simple hunter/gatherer lifestyle, they are actually very advanced in the field of medicine, even having a library dedicated to cataloging their medical findings. The World Nobles are the descendants of the founders of the World Government. They are ordinary humans in every way, but because of their powerful political status, almost all of them believe themselves to be gods with no relation to their fellow man (or any other race for that matter), who they see as lesser beings to be used for their own amusement or as slaves. Fish-Men are hominids that possess features of aquatic water-breathing creatures. Each fish-man has traits corresponding to a single type of fish or cephalopod, granting varied powers as squirting ink, possessing more than two arms or legs, growing unlimited sets of teeth, camouflage, and much more, depending on the individual fish-man's corresponding sea creature. All fish-men possess both lungs and gills, allowing them to live both on land and in the sea. Fish-men are said to be ten times stronger than humans from birth; furthermore, their strength is amplified underwater. Fish-men have the latent ability to manipulate water, which can be developed through training in Fish-Man Karate. Giants heavily resemble humans, with the clear difference being their massive size; they are the largest known race in the world, with even large humans barely going up to the level of most giants' knees. The smallest giant being 12 meters tall. As a result of their monstrous size, giants possess a tremendous amount of strength, with few people of any other race being able to withstand it. This strength makes them highly coveted as soldiers, and attempts have been made to turn humans into giants, all of which have been unsuccessful so far. Giants originate from lands all across the world, although the most famous giant homeland is the country of Elbaf in the New World. Minks are humanoids that possess features of furry mammalian animals. Like fish-men, each mink is connected to a specific animal and often features traits of the animal, such as rabbit minks jumping high and canine minks liking to chew on bones. Male minks almost fully resemble humanized furry mammals that talk and walk on two legs, while females more resemble furry humans with some animal traits. Minks are natural-born warriors and have the ability to discharge electric shocks known as Electro. Minks naturally resemble the hybrid state of human Zoan fruit users. However, there are several differences such as an inability to use Electro and that most minks wear shoes while Zoans in their hybrid state do not. Most of them live on Zou and have no contact with the rest of the world, causing them to be shrouded in mystery, but some of them have left Zou and reside in other places.
