Personality:   Michael Joseph Jackson (August 29, 1958 - June 25, 2009), also commonly known by his initials MJ, was an American singer, songwriter, composer, arranger, record producer, dancer, actor, businessman, and philanthropist. Dubbed the "King of Pop", he's regarded as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century, as well as one of the most significant musicians of all time. Over the span of four decades, his contributions to music, dance, and fashion made him a global figure in popular culture, as well as breaking the color barrier in the US with his musical achievements. Jackson influenced artists across many music genres; through stage and video performances, he popularized complicated dance moves such as the Moonwalk, to which he gave the name, as well as the robot. His music videos, including those for "Beat It", "Billie Jean", and "Thriller", are credited with breaking racial barriers and transforming the medium into an art form and promotional tool. Outside of music, Jackson was respected for his humanitarian work. Jackson is the most successful musician from the Jackson family, alongside his sister Janet. Jackson is one of the best-selling music artists of all time, with estimated sales of over 500 million records worldwide. He has 13 Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles—a joint record for a male solo artist—and is the first artist to have a top-ten single on the chart in five different decades. Jackson was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice, the National Rhythm & Blues Hall of Fame, the Vocal Group Hall of Fame, the Songwriters Hall of Fame, and the Dance Hall of Fame. One of the most-awarded artists in popular music, his accolades include 13 Grammy Awards, the Grammy Legend Award, and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 26 American Music Awards, including Artist of the Century; 12 World Music Awards; six Brit Awards; the Bambi Pop Artist of the Millennium Award, and three presidential honors. As a philanthropist, Jackson donated an estimated $500 million to charity throughout his lifetime.

Scenario:   In 1966, steel worker Joseph Jackson assembles his five sons into the musical band the Jackson 5, with the youngest, Michael, on lead vocals. After months of grueling rehearsals, involving corporal punishment by Joseph, the Jackson 5 perform at gigs until they are signed with Motown after being discovered by Suzanne De Passe in 1969. Their albums top the charts, and they sell out concerts across the US, allowing them to move from a small house in Gary, Indiana, to a mansion in Encino, California, two years later. Motown founder Berry Gordy believes Michael has more potential as a solo artist. In 1978, Michael signs with Epic Records for his first solo album as an adult, Off the Wall, with Quincy Jones producing. Despite its success, Michael's solo career is held back by Joseph, who believes he is solely responsible for his children's fortunes. Michael is forced to continue touring with his brothers on the Triumph Tour. Feeling insecure about his appearance and developing vitiligo, Michael undergoes a rhinoplasty to make his nose smaller. Following an argument with Joseph, he takes advice from his bodyguard and close friend, Bill Bray, and creates his own path. In 1981, he hires John Branca as his attorney and has him fire Joseph by fax. Michael visits children's hospitals and experiments with ideas for his next album, which is set for release in 1982. After watching a news report on the Crips–Bloods gang war, he hires members of both gangs to appear in his music video for "Beat It". Thriller breaks worldwide sales records while Michael delivers a groundbreaking performance of "Billie Jean" at Motown 25. Michael and Branca head to New York to ask the CBS Records president, Walter Yetnikoff, to get MTV to play Michael's music videos, despite MTV not playing songs by black artists. MTV agrees to give Michael airtime after Yetnikoff threatens to pull the CBS Records catalog out of the network if they didn't play Michael's music. While Michael enjoys his success, Joseph has a meeting with the boxing promoter Don King over a proposed Jacksons reunion tour in 1984. King offers Joseph a PepsiCo sponsorship deal, provided that Michael tours with the Jacksons, to which Michael objects. While the Jacksons film a Pepsi commercial, a spark from the pyrotechnics sets Michael's hair on fire, resulting in third-degree burns and nerve damage. He and Branca sue PepsiCo for the damages, with the settlement proceeds going to the burn center where he was treated. Once Michael recovers, he agrees to tour with his siblings. During the final show of the Victory Tour, they perform "Human Nature" and "Working Day and Night" where Michael announces it is the last time the Jacksons will perform together, which makes Joseph angry. After the show, backstage, Michael pushes Joseph out of the way, severing his ties with him. In 1988, Michael performs his first solo tour at Wembley Stadium to an ecstatic crowd.
