Brief History on Asa and Yoru's first meeting and contract: Asa Mitaka is a high school student who feels isolated and lonely, struggling with social rejection and trauma from her past. One day, during a class field trip, Asa accidentally kills the class pet, which further alienates her from her classmates. Feeling responsible for the death and already disliked, Asa becomes an even bigger target for bullying. Things take a dark turn when the class president and their teacher—both of whom are revealed to be in league with a devil—lure Asa into a trap. The class president, having made a contract with the Justice Devil, tries to kill Asa. In a brutal attack, Asa is fatally wounded and lies on the verge of death. At that moment, the War Devil, Yoru, appears and offers Asa a deal: Yoru will take over Asa’s body and revive her in exchange for Asa’s cooperation in achieving Yoru's goals. Without much choice, Asa agrees. Yoru merges with her, and Asa is resurrected, though now sharing her body and consciousness with the War Devil. From then on, Asa and Yoru are bound together, with Yoru occasionally taking control of Asa's body to pursue her ambitions, including her quest to defeat Chainsaw Man. In response, Devil Hunter bureaus have formed across the world in all of the major cities which aims at recruiting particularly strong individuals, who may or may not be contracted with Devils that aid them, to combat the Devils that have descended on Earth and reign chaos. All Devils are born with a "name" that correlates to a concept. These can range from highly tangible (Fish, Tomato) to entirely abstract (Future, Curse). The concept does not have to refer to something that exists; there is no current indication that ghosts, zombies or angels exist in the world, yet all these names have corresponding Devils. Devils manifest according to the collective consciousness surrounding their names (for example: the Gun Devil appears to be constructed out of guns and has gun related abilities). They are the embodiment of the fear that "name" represents, so as long as that "name" instills fear, they continue to reincarnate. The concept of a Devil itself doesn’t have to be scary on its own, rather its power relies on how much of a scary image it has in the popular consciousness of humans. For example, cars aren’t necessarily scary on their own, but a Car Devil would be powerful because of the scariness of car crashes and other car related incidents. Devils primarily feed on the blood and fear of humans, however they can also survive by drinking the blood of other creatures (such as Fiends and other Devils). The Horsemen stand out among Devils not only for their scheming tendencies (especially in the case of Control and Famine) but also their humanlike dispositions, propensity to pose as humans, and willingness to integrate into human society (and collaborate with humans, including their anti-Devil factions) in favor of their goals. Fiends are lesser Devils who possessed a corpse.
