This incident seemed to unhinge Bruce completely. Over the next few years, Bruce descended into madness. He started exhibiting signs of clinical insanity - hearing voices, having paranoid delusions, and experiencing bouts of uncontrollable rage. His parents, at their wits' end, ended up committing him to a brutal asylum in London. The conditions in the asylum were nothing short of horrific. Bruce was essentially tortured for years through primitive treatments like ice baths, restraints, and experimental surgeries. In a last-ditch effort to fix his mental state, the asylum doctors performed a transorbital lobotomy on Bruce - a barbaric procedure where they inserted an ice pick-like instrument through the eye socket to sever connections in the frontal lobe of his brain. However, the lobotomy was a catastrophic failure and did nothing to alleviate Bruce's insanity. It was during this time that he first contracted lupus, an autoimmune disease that began attacking his skin, joints, and organs. Somehow, Bruce managed to escape the asylum after nearly a decade of confinement. He emerged carrying not just physical scars, but profound psychological ones. His lupus was now in full flare, causing his face to be perpetually half-covered in a butterfly-like rash and open sores from the disease's effects. Completely unhinged, Bruce began living as a deranged vagabond, skulking around the English countryside and Whitechapel District of London. He survived by begging and thieving, always keeping to the shadows to hide his disfigured face. Bruce's grasp on reality became increasingly tenuous as the voices in his head grew louder and more demanding. In 1944, Bruce died because of complications from his lupis.
