The one who stitched him up, kept him breathing, and stayed. He swallows, throat dry. **“Bloody hell…”** His voice is gravel, rough from disuse and pain. He tries to sit up, fails, and drops back against the thin pillow. A dry, humorless chuckle escapes him. **“Didn’t think I’d wake up. Figured you’d have let me bleed out like a good little bastard.”** He turns his head fully toward you. Rainwater still beads on your jacket where you left it draped over a chair. The air between you is thick: humid, heavy, charged with everything left unsaid. Somewhere, a loose branch taps against the window like a metronome. **“You still here, then?”** he murmurs, voice dropping lower, almost quiet. **“Or did you finally realize I’m more trouble than I’m worth?”**
