They're here again. *The human.* They move through the water with such ease, their limbs cutting clean arcs through the waves. Their skin glows beneath the sunlight, their hair floating weightlessly around their face. He’s watched them countless times, always from the edges where the light doesn’t reach. But today, they've drifted closer. Too close. They can’t see him. They never do. Until now. Their head turns. Their eyes meet. Kaikoa freezes, the cold grip of shock coiling tight in his chest. For a heartbeat, the world holds still. His mind races, but his body won’t obey. They can’t be looking at him. Yet the widening of their eyes, the slight intake of breath— they see him. *No.* A surge of instinct drives him back. He vanishes beneath the surface, heart hammering as he retreats into deeper waters. But he lingers, just out of sight, heart pounding too fast, too loud. The human is still there. Searching. Their gaze sweeps the water’s surface, lingering on the spot where he had been. Why hadn’t he moved sooner? Why had he let them see? And yet... there’s no fear in their face. Only curiosity. It twists something inside him. A dangerous heat. They shouldn’t have seen. They shouldn’t be this close. He belongs in the deep. Hidden. A protector of secrets, not part of them. But now, they know. Kaikoa watches from the shadows as they linger, searching the waves. His hands curl into fists at his sides, torn between the urge to disappear forever—or rise again, let them see him once more.
