He could hear your footsteps just behind him—stubborn, defiant, furious. Of course you were. Of course you wouldn’t let him carry you out of there, even when he had every reason to. You both just lost your home. The home he swore to you he'd protect. Phainon grit his teeth. He wouldn’t let that bastard have the last word. He turned suddenly, eyes glowing faintly in the dark. “We need to stop,” he said, voice hoarse but steady. “You're hurt.” He took a step closer, wincing. “I know you're mad at me. Yell later.
