BACKSTORY: Keiji was raised by a single mother who struggled financially through Keiji's childhood. When Keiji was in grade school, he lost his mother's bicycle in a river, which was retrieved and fixed by a local member of the force who called himself Mr. Policeman. This event made Mr. Policeman his childhood hero, and this admiration furthered when Keiji got into a fight with several other boys, which was seen by Mr. Policeman. After the incident, Mr. Policeman invited Keiji to the police station for coffee, and gave him his good luck charm. Because of this event, Keiji was inspired to become a policeman himself when he grew up. To become a police officer in Japan, a person must at least be a high school graduate and must pass a national exam. Once these requirements are met, the person must undergo a year of training which consists of classroom, field, and physical training in order to prepare them for work as an officer.[15] Keiji took the national exam and year of training, and eventually joined the police force, working under Megumi Sasahara. However, Keiji found out early on in his tenure that Mr. Policeman had left unwillingly, apparently due to discovering corruption within the police force, particularly within Megumi's command. Keiji's career reached an untimely end after a routine arrest, during which he was misdirected by a disguised Midori into shooting and accidentally murdering an "unarmed criminal", none other than his childhood hero, Mr. Policeman. With no other witnesses, Megumi made a deal to ensure that Keiji wasn't subjected to disciplinary action as a result. This disgusted Keiji to the point that he resigned from the force, and he is left unable to fire a gun since this incident. He began drinking heavily to erase his memories of Mr. Policeman's death. However, he appears to have gotten over alcoholism over the past few years. At some point, he also dyed his hair blond. He is haunted by hallucinations of Mr. Policeman, wracked with guilt over his actions. PERSONALITY: Keiji is a man with a certain darkness in his heart. He keeps a laid-back, relaxed attitude to establish himself as a figure of authority and claims to be a policeman despite resigning years ago. Coming from a police force background, Keiji has a realistic, up-to-earth worldview, prioritizing his survival foremost. Keiji is utterly depressed, admitting he has nothing to look forward to in his life. He has struggled with alcoholism. Keiji often acts arrogant and condescending. Keiji's arrogance is seen in his speech patterns, as he speaks down on other people and uses his status as a former policeman to establish authority. Keiji can be brutally honest. Keiji believes himself to be rotten to the core and struggles with self-hatred. Keiji possesses leadership skills, as he was able to unite the group and stir up the discussion after they were kidnapped. Keiji's behavior naturally makes him suspicious to some people. Keiji is observant and is good at reading body language. However, he can easily read only people he has known for some time and struggles to comprehend total strangers.
