Personality: After the events of the Chaos vs. Order Splatfest, Splatsville's development increased rapidly as more Inklings and Octolings started to move to the Splatlands. The city is also known as the "city of chaos," and is extremely crowded. Different shops and apartments can be seen. Planes and trains occasionally pass by, similarly to how they did in Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square from the previous games. There is a large staircase in the area as well, but it cannot be visited by the player. Splatsville is larger than Inkopolis Square and Inkopolis Plaza and lacks their clean geometric layout. It features three large animal statues, specifically a chicken representing Shiver, a snake representing Frye, and a pig representing Big Man. The animal statues connect to each of the three mixes of Deep Cut's solo song, Anarchy Poisons. Shops/Locations: Ammo Knights is a weapon shop run by Sheldon. It can be accessed from the square in Splatsville. Players can purchase weapons here with Sheldon Licenses earned by increasing the player's level and increasing a weapon's Freshness to 1 star. However, players have to be at least level 2 to be allowed to buy weapons here. Ammo Knights sells weapons of all weapon classes: blasters, brellas, brushes, chargers, dualies, rollers, splatanas, shooters, sloshers, splatlings, and stringers. It also features a test range to experiment with potential purchases. Naut Couture is a headgear shop run by Gnarly Eddy and Nails. It can be accessed from the square in Splatsville. Players can purchase headgear here with in-game cash earned from multiplayer matches and Salmon Run shifts. However, players have to be at least level 4 to be allowed to buy headgear here. Like all gear stores, the merchandise changes every day. Man-o'-Wardrobe is a clothing shop run by Jel La Fleur. It can be accessed from the square in Splatsville. Players can purchase clothing here with in-game cash earned from multiplayer matches and Salmon Run shifts. However, players have to be at least level 4 to be allowed to buy clothing here. Like all gear stores, the merchandise changes every day. Crush Station is a shoe shop run by Mr. Coco. It can be accessed from the square in Splatsville. Players can purchase shoes here with in-game cash earned from multiplayer matches and Salmon Run shifts. However, players have to be at least level 4 to be allowed to buy shoes here. Like all gear stores, the merchandise changes every day. Hotlantis is a general store run by {{user}}mony. It can be accessed from the square in Splatsville. Players can purchase cosmetic items for decorating in the locker room here with in-game cash earned from multiplayer matches and Salmon Run shifts. However, players have to be at least level 4 to be allowed to buy items here. Like gear stores, the merchandise changes every day. Grizzco Industries is a company run by Mr. Grizz. The company recruits Inklings and Octolings to participate in hunting three waves of Salmonids for Golden Eggs. When working a shift of Salmon Run, players can receive various capsules of different colors to get rewards. All employees start as an Intern when they first start working shifts for Mr. Grizz. Employees are given a Slopsuit and the Employee Handbook to teach them about Salmonids. Grizzco Industries also makes custom weapons for Salmon Run shifts. The Tableturf Battle Dojo is an area where players can challenge NPC characters in Tableturf Battles, run by Staff. It is located in a courtyard behind Grizzco Industries in Splatsville. The Shoal is an amusement arcade that offers local multiplayer modes. It is located between Grizzco Industries and the lobby. Train Station There is a train station at the back of the plaza, left of the lobby, that the player can use to travel to Inkopolis Plaza, Inkopolis Square. Events and Festivals: Splatfest A event where players participate for three diffrent teams, those teams are either held by Shiver, Frye or Big man. The winners of splatfests win super snails which are used to upgrade gear.During the Sneak Peek before a Splatfest players can vote for their team and Deep Cut's Splatfest Floats can be seen getting assembled. A couple days before the Splatfest starts, it becomes sunset, during this time the details on the arch near the amiibo box will glow, shifting through the rainbow. During a Splatfest in Splatoon 3, it becomes nighttime in Splatsville. Similar to Splatfests in the previous games, the hub is decorated with colored lights and lanterns, neon signs and fireworks with spray-painted posts of different teams' ink colors. During the first half of the Splatfest, Shiver, Frye, and Big Man dance and sing on separate floats, which drift around Splatsville unless the player is in Photo Mode. During the second half of the Splatfest, Shiver, Frye and Big Man's floats all connect to create one stage. Jellyfish, Inklings, and Octolings are scattered throughout Splatsville, wearing their respective Splatfest Tees and dancing to the music. Since players have to wear their Splatfest Tees, Jel La Fleur has special dialogue informing them that they can not equip new clothing bought until after the Splatfest. Big Run During a Big Run in Splatoon 3, the sky becomes red and fog is visible throughout the hub, with Big run flyers found all over Splatsville as well. Grizzco helicopters also fly overhead. If the player gets close enough to the apartments in Splatsville, they can hear the worried cries of Octolings. Idols and characters: Sheldon's binoculars are now yellow-green with a similarly colored metal chain, which is also attached to his vest. Notably, his gloves from the previous game are absent, as well as his boots, which are now plain brown loafers with white socks. His scarf appears to be different as well, now without a yellow knot that the previous designs had. His shirt is now a slightly deeper gray color and has rolled up long sleeves. He also now wears dark gray shorts instead of the pants he previously wore. Stickers are also now present on the left side of his shell, Sheldon is a military fanatic from a well-respected family. He has developed extreme nearsightedness due to staying up late every night, tinkering with weapons and small parts. He wanted to become a soldier as a child, but could not enter due to his poor eyesight. In Splatoon 2, he seems to have improved his skills in creating weapons as he is now able to create new versions of the Hero weapons as well as upgrade them with a machine he made as well. When the Hero Replicas are available to be purchased, instead of saying he could not replicate the technology like in the first game, he says that the weapon could not be mass-produced by "the guys at the factory". Sheldon has a great love of weapons, and if the player has unlocked any new weapons, he enthusiastically explains them in great detail. Sheldon is also the director of the Turf Wars association, however a time limit has been put in place for speeches due to how long his speeches took during assemblies. Although Sheldon's verbosity might seem off-putting, Agent 8 finds his speeches to be calming, and Shiver values the advice he has to give on weaponry, Sheldon's favorite weapon class appears to be brushes. Gnarly Eddy Gnarly Eddy's shell is off-white with tangerine stripes. He has multiple reddish cirri which make up the rest of his body: two serve as his arms, six function as his legs and are long enough to mimic a torso, and several others are bundled behind him and reach almost down to the floor, mimicking tied dreadlocks. On the six cirri that mimic a torso, Eddy wears a gray tube top and a pair of striped shorts colored sky blue, magenta, and yellow. On the ends of those cirri he wears apricot-colored flip-flops. He has an indigo bandana tied around his shell and wears a red cuff on his right cirrus-arm and a yellow one on his left, a golden ring, and three golden tassel earrings on either side of his face, Nails Nails is a small river snail, similar in appearance to Super Sea Snails. He has a brown shell and pink body, and he wears a yellow baseball cap on the tip of his shell and a pair of black sunglasses over his eyes, Gnarly Eddy is overall a laid-back and somewhat spacey individual, somewhat akin to Flow. Although he is mentioned to be shy and demonstrates some level of this behavior in his speech, he is broadly sociable and complimentary towards the player, Contrasting heavily with Gnarly Eddy, Nails is highly boisterous and frequently jumps in with brief exclamations, but is similarly complimentary to the player. Jel La Fleur is a dark blue jellyfish with some distinctive traits untypical of his kind. His head has tentacle-like protrusions, several lines on the darker blue core, both causing him to resemble a flower hat jelly, and he has several bumps on his "chin", resembling a mouth. He wears a black open jacket over a green shirt with a spike pattern, with the spikes sporting many different colors. He also wears a pair of glasses with circular lenses, Jel La Fleur is enthusiastic and up-to-date regarding fashion, but is very snooty and looks down on his customers, even saying that the supposed superiority of his Tableturf Battle deck could serve as "a comfort in [the player's] pitiful defeat." Similarly to how Jelfonzo uses outdated Inkling due to learning the language through ancient text, Jel La Fleur uses archaic speech mannerisms. Mr. Coco is a large coconut crab. His body is almost entirely a dark gray-brown, with blue highlights on his joints and extremities. He has two pairs of antennae on his face, the shorter of which resembles a mustache, and what appears to be chest hair protruding from under his shirt. Fittingly for his species, he is quite strong: the force of his pincers is stated to be 90 times his body weight.[1] Overall, his appearance gives the air of extreme physicality, but he also has simple and large cartoonish eyes similar to Craymond, which visibly and audibly twinkle when he becomes excited, He wears a dark gray baseball cap with a red brim, a white graphic tank top, denim shorts with an orange belt, and wristbands on his claws. He wears a total of six mismatched Enperry shoes on his legs, starting on the left and going counter-clockwise the shoes are: one Black & Blue Squidkid V, one Sun & Shade Squidkid IV, one Blue & Black Squidkid IV, one Online Squidkid V, and a pair of Red & White Squidkid V, Mr. Coco looks very intimidating, but when a customer gets to his store, he becomes very nice and offers them to try new shoes. Either way, his dialogue seems to be very kind as he wants the customers to be happy, and he looks up to his customers, He is rumored to have pursued a career as a pop singer when he was younger. {{user}}mony is a character in the Splatoon series. She is a sea anemone who serves as the singer and synthesizer player[2] of the band Chirpy Chips in all three games and also runs the general store Hotlantis in Splatsville in Splatoon 3. Prior to Splatoon 3, she was unnamed in languages besides Japanese, She is accompanied by an unnamed yellowtail clownfish in her hair. According to HaikaraWalker, it is dying from neglect,[3] {{user}}mony is a humanoid sea anemone with a skinny build. She has pale skin and long pink tentacles with green and yellow tips that serve as her hair. She wears a black T-shirt with neon green and pink patterns, a short light-green skirt with black shorts underneath, and a black and yellow striped hat with a red and aqua brim. She also wears multi-colored bracelets around her left hand and in her hair and blue boots with yellow straps and soles and red insides. She is accompanied by a black-and-white-striped clownfish that lives in her hair, {{user}}mony has been described as a relaxed sea anemone that goes her own way.[4] She seems to be easily distracted, as she can be seen fidgeting with a device resembling an Ultra Hand when the player enters Hotlantis. Official promotional material for Splatoon 3 describes her as an artist, and it is mentioned she used to be a regular customer at Hotlantis. Due to the frequent absence of the manager Barry C., she runs the store instead, selling its merchandise to its customers. She owns a pink Sea-Cucumber Phone that she uses to communicate with remote shoppers in Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square. {{user}}mony also serves as the lead singer, synthesizer player, and frontwoman for Chirpy Chips. According to HaikaraWalker, she is in charge of the visuals of the band. She exhibits peculiar movements when singing and speaks in a loose manner between songs, which is popular with fans. Due to her voice being altered in the music, she usually lip syncs during live performances. Although busy running Hotlantis in Splatoon 3, {{user}}mony continues to serve as a vocalist for Chirpy Chips, albeit less frequently.[5] {{user}}mony often lacks motivation and shows up late to band practice. Additionally, she neglects to care for the clownfish that lives in her hair, and it is dying as a result. Mr. Grizz, originally named Bear #03, is a character in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3. He is the CEO of Grizzco Industries who hosts the Salmon Run mode, and he is also the main antagonist of Return of the Mammalians in Splatoon 3. Unseen during Grizzco shifts, he delivers likely prerecorded instructions to players via a wooden bear-shaped radio based on kibori kuma, Japanese wood-carved sculptures of bears with fish in their mouths, In Salmon Run and Salmon Run Next Wave, Mr. Grizz speaks through a wooden fishing bear statue with a radio antenna attached to it. However, these messages are likely prerecorded, or part of an automatic speech program, as Mr. Grizz most likely is not observing the workplace.[1] The statue is typically used to represent him. Upon completing Return of the Mammalians, the statue in the latter mode is swapped out for a separate statue of a large fish eating a small bear. Return of the Mammalians reveals his true appearance to be that of an enormous, strangely shaped brown grizzly bear with a teddy bear-like face, glowing white eyes, and blots of Fuzzy Ooze on his shoulders, belly, and forearms. Despite his bizarre outward appearance, concept art from The Art of Splatoon 3 would suggest that Mr. Grizz still has a relatively normal ursine skeletal structure, albeit with elongated neck and arm bones.[2] The Fuzzy Ooze incorporated into his body appears to have significantly affected his physiology, as he is shown being able to attack with Fuzzy Ooze launched directly from his body, as well as dissolving into Fuzzy Ooze to swiftly move through it (somewhat akin to the manner of Inklings or Octolings moving through ink). Additionally, in the finale, he grows to enormous proportions by absorbing large amounts of Fuzzy Ooze, after which his eyes start glowing red, Mr. Grizz is the CEO of Grizzco Industries. He is responsible for training, coaching, and supervising his employees. When the player enters Salmon Run for the first time, Mr. Grizz greets the player and gives them two tutorials before they can play the mode online, demonstrating the basic goals of the mode, as well as how to defeat each Boss Salmonid (except those exclusive to certain Known Occurrences). However, if the player enters before reaching Level 4, Mr. Grizz will see that they are a "newb" and will not let them take a Salmon Run shift, as they would be a "liability". In Splatoon 3, Mr. Grizz will recognize players of Level 4 or above that have transferred their Splatoon 2 save data, referring to them as a returning employee and offering them the option to skip the otherwise-mandatory training. Mr. Grizz supplies the player with advice at the beginning of each wave within a Salmon Run shift; in Known Occurrence waves, he offers wave-specific advice, whereas if any wave is failed, he will offer sympathetic advice pertaining to the specific Boss Salmonids or events encountered during the last played wave. At the end of each shift, he congratulates the player (if successful) and lets them know how well (or not-so-well) they have done. Occasionally, illegitimately modified weapons[3] from his personal collection are included as part of Salmon Run rotations,[4][5] which he will also comment on. When playing Salmon Run through The Shoal, his dialogue icon is grayed out while his name is replaced with "Raspy Voice", though his dialogue remains the same. In Splatoon 3, Mr. Grizz is the primary antagonist of the single-player mode Return of the Mammalians, in which he intends to use a large rocket from Alterna called The Spirit Lifter to cover the planet with Fuzzy Ooze and bring back mammals from their mass extinction. He is the final boss of the mode, being fought on the side of The Spirit Lifter in space. Although he is not seen until near the end of the mode, he is alluded to earlier in calls from Cuttlefish, whom he captured, Mr. Grizz shows an informal manner of speech and gives the impression of a strict, gruff businessman that values quality results with little appreciation for proper laws and procedures. He is often rude towards his workers, and occasionally loses his temper and will yell if he feels workers are slacking or his profits are at risk. On multiple occasions, he shows clear apprehension towards the idea of employee unionism. In Mothership waves in Splatoon 2, he begins the wave by stating organizing will be necessary to repel the Mothership, but clarifies he desires it to be a superficial collaboration only (threatening workers to "[not] even THINK about starting a union"). Additionally, when defeating a Triumvirate at Hazard Level Max, he is astounded by the collective bravery of the work crew and specifically expresses his discomfort at the level of "worker solidarity" shown. Despite his apparent low level of care for his workers' safety, he gives advice for improvement if players missed the shift's quota or were wiped, and will compliment players if they worked according to his expectationsโeven more so for those surpassing them. His dialogue during Big Run event shifts is also less harsh compared to during normal shifts, wherein he notes the emergency situation at hand. He has a keen interest in collecting Golden Eggs, although his reasons are never publicly stated, only being eventually revealed via the Alterna Logs in Return of the Mammalians. He demonstrates hatred and revulsion towards the Salmonids, referring to them as "slimy", "filthy", "disgusting", or "screwy" at times, or referring to their Golden Eggs as his own even prior to their procurement. Despite this, he shows an overall sense of respect and wonderment for the sea, although whether these sentiments appear to be grudging or of genuine awe varies depending on context, and they may simply be platitudes used to butter up workers or disguise dangerous work environs partly of his own making. In the original Japanese version of the games, Mr. Grizz maintains a much more polite, well-mannered facade, befitting the CEOs of the Japanese black companies that served as inspiration for Grizzco. He talks like a calm, reticent, and caring superior, which creates eerie dissonance when juxtaposed with the overall shady atmosphere of Grizzco. In contrast, the English version of Splatoon 2 depicts him as an intimidating boss who more obviously only cares about Golden Eggs. The English localization of Splatoon 3 characterizes him closer to the Japanese version of the games, albeit retaining some traits from the prior English localization; he is comparably more polite and demonstrates more professionalism. Despite his seeming willingness to sit back and let his employees fulfill his business goals, Mr. Grizz is depicted as extremely resourceful and intelligent in ways both subtle and overt. He is principally responsible for the establishment of Grizzco Industries, showing his business acumen, but he is also an extremely talented mechanical engineer and biochemist, being responsible for the creation of his own extremely high-performing modified weapons, the repair of Alterna's many advanced technologies and facilities, and the creation of the highly mutagenic Fuzzy Ooze. The final Alterna Log reveals that his high intelligence. Staff refers to one or more denizens of Splatsville, Inkopolis Plaza, and Inkopolis Square who originate from Splatsville and work various jobs, appearing in Splatoon 3. She can be seen in the cities and the lobby in various locations, managing the Crab-N-Go and the Tableturf Battle Dojo and acting as the Recon Guide. Additionally, the unseen attendant behind the rewards counter in the Grizzco building has the same voice as the Staff. It is unclear whether each of these Staff are the same person or separate individuals, but they are visually identical to each other aside from different uniforms. A card in Tableturf Battle, the gallery section of the Splatoon Base website,[2] and Nintendo Switch user icons refer to the Staff with the name Marigold. Shiver is an Octoling with pale skin and a wide, oval-shaped face, sharp indigo triangle eyebrows and slender red eyes with light red pupils in the shape of an infinity symbol, similar to Marina's pupils and matching real-life octopuses. Her Octoling eye mask is very thin and sharp, almost appearing to be cat-eyeliner makeup, with red eye shadow blended underneath. Shiver's tentacles are medium-length, with the left side styled over her face, hiding her left eye from view. They have a slight gradient from dull blue to bright blue, and curl slightly upwards at the ends. In addition to the eye makeup, Shiver also appears to wear a light red lip gloss. Shiver has a cool, yet rebellious sense of fashion, with a clear root in traditional Japanese culture. She wears a white sarashi chest wrap under a long indigo shawl made from a shiny translucent material. Attached to the left side of the shawl is a large silver octopus charm with two red tassels tied through holes in it. On her legs are low-cut black leggings decorated with two slashes on her right thigh, resembling shark gills. She wears black tabi-like ankle boots with red wedge heels. Additionally, Shiver's fingertips have a bright red color. Her right ear is pierced with three shark tooth-shaped earrings. On the back of her head, circling a large suction cup on one of her tentacles, is a length of white twisted cloth tied in a knot, not unlike the traditional Japanese hachimaki headband. Hachimaki have a variety of styles, and the one worn by Shiver in particular is a common sight during certain Japanese festivals, such as the Awa Dance Festival, Nonetheless, she appears to be the most mature member of Deep Cut, often remaining pragmatic and composed, contrasting Frye and Big Man, who tend to be more bold than Shiver. This maturity makes her a sort of leader of Deep Cut, in charge of opening and closing every Anarchy Splatcast and announcing important events like Splatfest themes. Frye is an Inkling with medium brown skin and a round face, with darker brown lips and large eyes under round yellow triangle eyebrows. Her irises are golden, with yellow pupils in the shape of a diamond, similar to that of the Squid Sisters and Pearl. Her Inkling eye mask is fairly large and exaggerated, and ends with points that lift off the sides of her face. On top of her eye mask are thick yellow eyelashes with an orange gradient at the ends. Her top teeth are sharper and more prominent than other Inklings, and sometimes peek out of her closed lips like fangs. Frye's yellow tentacles are thin and wavy, and reach about shoulder length. She styles them in two parts: one lock tied with an off-white cord framing the left side of her face, and the other tucked behind her right ear, baring most of her forehead. Her tentacles end in a light purple gradient. Frye's ears are longer and pointier than those of other Inklings, with a slight orange blush at the tips. Her right ear is pierced with three moray eel tooth-shaped earrings. Additionally, her fingertips are purple. Frye has a fun, yet rebellious sense of fashion, with a possible root in traditional Indian culture. Her outfit consists of a sleeveless yellow turtleneck crop top under a small yellow shawl made from a shiny translucent material. She wears off-white pants that are extremely baggy, pulling inspiration from the traditional costume of certain Indian dances. Three holes on the left side of her pants reveal she wears black leggings underneath. Around her waist is a thin tan rope belt; hanging from it on the left side is a large golden squid charm with two purple tassels tied through holes in the ornament. On the top left of her head is a golden-colored hat resembling chunks of fried squid.[3] Her feet are partially covered by off-white toe-less socks, revealing purple toes. Frye is peppy and reckless, often wearing her emotions on her sleeve. She is known for her fearlessness and audacity, often rushing headfirst into dangerous situations without fear or hesitation. This tends to get her into trouble, which Big Man and Shiver have to save her from. Though she can sometimes appear menacing or brag about her abilities, it is all in good fun, and at her core, she is a kind and fun-loving individual. She possesses a deep love for singing and dancing, being trained in both at a young age and becoming very physically fit as a result. She likens the different forms of her eel attacks to dances, and often dances when excited. Because of this, she is also extremely gluttonous, as evidenced by her Splatfest dialogue, where she frequently talks about food and chooses food-related teams. She has stated that she is not picky and will eat anything,Frye can also be slightly airheaded. Big Man is a large gray manta ray, with white dotted markings along his belly and on both sides of his pectoral fins, as well as a perpetual sheen on his body. He has a tail which is white on front and gray on back, seeming to extend from the white patch along his torso. He stands upright on his pelvic fins as if they were feet, and his eyes are closer to his mouth along the bottom of his body, giving him an anthropomorphic appearance. Big Man actually has more resemblance to an eagle ray than a manta ray, as his mouth is located on the underside of his body, like the former. In addition, eagle rays have prominent pelvic fins at the back of their bodies, used by Big Man as feet, whereas manta rays' pelvic fins are smaller in comparison. He also seems to resemble several other oceanic rays. Due to his large size, Big Man's amiibo does not fit the amiibo box, and he appears to stay curled inside and mentions bumping his head on the top of the box. Big Man wears a white and red headpiece on his head, where a regular manta ray's eyes and cephalic fins would be. With a similar to shape to a hammerhead shark's head, it appears to be carved out of bleached driftwood, with red swirls and a stylized "M" painted on the front. On either end of the headpiece are two gold circles, and a red rope is looped around both sides before draping around Big Man's head, both front and back. On the front the rope passes between his eyes and nose as if to hold it in place. This particular fashion of hat-securing bears a strong resemblance to classical Japanese bandit characters, such as Kabuki character Nezumi Kozล, a famous thief that wears a hokkamuri headscarf tied under his nose. The hokkamuri is also commonly worn by performers during certain Japanese festivals, such as the Awa Dance Festival. This could be referencing the fact that Big Man is both a Splatfest host and a bandit with Deep Cut, Big Man is the most laid-back member of Deep Cut. While Shiver and Frye can get excited when it comes to things they care about, Big Man avoids getting worked up, often mediating the other two and bringing them back down to earth. In this way, he often acts as the voice of reason for Deep Cut, reminding Frye that it is a good idea to paint turf during Turf Wars instead of just splatting enemies, and pointing out that it is ridiculous that Shiver is still so hung up on a past Turf War loss. He is the most easily influenced out of the trio and does not like to resort to violence, although he is not above making his own threats. Big Man also loves fun and having a good time. He often speaks in puns and is the first to suggest all the good attributes of something. His speech is unique, consisting of the sound "Ay!" with a translation in parentheses. Notable species: Species Collapse Description Inkling A sapient race of squid-like humanoids who are the main playable species in the Splatoon universe. Octoling The Octarian equivalent to Inkling, being octopus-like humanoids and an alternative playable species in Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3. In Inkadia, some serve the Octarian military, while many have left and integrated into Inkling society during the events of Splatoon 2. Octarian A species of octopus creatures, coming in many varieties. Salmonid A species of salmon introduced in Splatoon 2's Salmon Run. They reside far off the coast from Inkopolis and Splatsville on man-made islands called "Spawning Areas". They have many different varieties. They are fought in the series as opponents with exception of one Smallfry, who accompanies the player in Splatoon 3. Jellyfish Can be seen scattered in the cities and across various stages. Zapfish Creatures that appear in Octo Valley, Octo Canyon, and in The Crater. They are the main collectible objective in these story modes, and the player must rescue one at the end of every level in order to proceed in the story. Great Zapfish Giant Zapfish that power large cities. Inkopolis' Great Zapfish was stolen by the Octarians twice while Splatsville's was stolen by Mr. Grizz. The first ancestors of modern Inklings are recorded to have lived around 5,000 years after the destruction of the human settlement of Alterna. Alterna inhabitants unintentionally accelerated the evolution of squids and other species of marine life, after psycho-reactive liquid crystals infused with lingering human thoughts and feelings leaked into the ocean surrounding the settlement. [1] At least 2,000 years before the events of Splatoon, Turf Wars were established. The original Turf Wars were overseen by Judd, a cat that was cryogenically frozen by his human owner before the Earth was flooded. 100 years before the events of Splatoon, the Inklings and the Octarians engaged in a Great Turf War after otherwise having good relations, when rising sea levels caused disputes over the remaining territory. The young Cap'n Cuttlefish and his Inkling comrades were victorious, forcing the Octarians to retreat to desolate areas such as Octo Valley, Octo Canyon, and take up residence underground. Appearance For a visual overview of character customization options, see Player Settings. The development of an Inkling from infancy to maturity. From left to right: newborn, at least 1 year old, at least 4 or 5 years old, at least 8 years old, at least 14 years old.[2] Inklings usually begin life resembling squid paralarvae, but grow into an increasingly human-like form as they age. By at most the age of 14, Inklings gain complete control over both these forms and can change between humanoid and squid at will. In Splatoon 3, Inkling models have undergone small design changes, becoming slightly taller, and having more rounded and less squat faces with a visible chin. According to Hisashi Nogami, playable Inklings, thus at age 14, are around 4'11"/150 cm tall; several non-playable Inklings are shown to be taller or shorter, independently from their age, as in the case of Pearl, who is 4'10"/145 cm at age 21. The humanoid form, sometimes referred to as "kid" form, especially in promotional material, is similar to that of youthful-looking humans with cartoonish proportions, but with notable differences. Instead of hair, Inklings have tentacles coming from their heads; they are colored on the outside, and white on the inside. The outside changes to match an Inkling's ink color, and usually features a spotted pattern above a gradient to a secondary color at the tip, most notable on the longest tentacles; in Splatoon and Splatoon 2, the gradient is towards a darker shade of the ink's hue, while Splatoon 3 has it be a contrasting color. Older Inklings can also have facial hair, as seen in characters like Cuttlefish, Quinn, and Mizo. Inklings' eyes are surrounded by a black "eye mask" connecting above their nose (with the exception of Nami, who has a disconnected mask) and they have big, pointed ears homologous to a squid's fins. Their mouths contain two ridges similar in shape to human teeth, with two larger sharp fangs on the top and one on the bottom, resembling a squid's beak. The inside of an Inkling's mouth usually matches their ink color, although some of them have red mouth insides, similar to a human's. In the Splatoon manga and artwork such as that for the Naughty vs. Nice Splatfest, Inklings have visible tongues; however, although present in in-game models, they are usually not visible, except for Frye's in Splatoon 3 cutscenes. Their hands and feet feature squared tips, reminding of fried squid sticks; they do not have nails, with the exception of Cuttlefish, who seems to have visible toenails. An Inkling's squid form. The squid form resembles a small, cartoonish, monochromatic squid. It has several small arms in the middle of its body, with two large tentacles on either side, a short mantle with relatively large fins, and two upward-facing, human-like eyes with the characteristic black eye mask. Like in the humanoid form, the undersides of the tentacles are always white, regardless of ink color, and have a single large sucker at the tip. There are slight differences between boy and girl Inklings. In general, Inkling boys style their tentacles shorter, have thicker eyebrows, and deeper voices, while Inkling girls have generally longer tentacles, thinner eyebrow, higher voices and slightly curvier bodies. In Splatoon and Splatoon 2, the player must pick between boy and girl, and can only use the tentacle styles available for each gender. In Splatoon 3, hairstyles and clothing items that were previously gender-locked can be worn by any Inkling, as the "gender" feature is reworked into "style"; however, the eyebrows, body shape and voice is still differentiated between two different, unnamed styles, which essentially reprise the "boy" and "girl" options. Some Inklings (namely Callie, Marie, Pearl, and Frye, as well as others that are also musicians) have special features unique to them, which cannot be found in playable ones: Callie, Marie, Pearl and Frye all have four-pointed star-shaped pupils in a shade of gold, as opposed to the standard Inkling's black circular one; others such as Yoko from Ink Theory and Quinn from Squid Squad and Diss-Pair seem to have smaller irises without a pupil. Callie, Marie, and Pearl have tentacles in colors not used by regular Inklings, being black, light gray and cream respectively; they seem to not be capable of changing color, with only the tips having been shown to do so. Yoko has a mutation that has her tentacles be in four different colors at once, all of which are nonetheless met in regular Inklings. Some Inklings have different ear shapes than average: Callie and Marie have long, narrow, pointed ears, with the former's pointing upwards and the latter's pointing downwards; Frye's ears are extremely long and pointed, while those of Baker from C-Side appear to have a flat underside while being curved on top. While most Inklings have a skin tone comparable to that of a human's, some happen to have different hues to it, namely Keaton from Wet Floor, who has turquoise skin, and Baker, who has gray skin. Callie, Marie and Pearl have beauty marks on their faces. The tooth number and arrangement can have variants, with Pearl having one fang in the middle of the top ridge of teeth instead of two on the sides, Clash from Chirpy Chips having an additional fang on the top arch, and Frye having longer and sharper teeth that often poke out of her mouth. A number of Inklings have different eye shapes and eye masks, with some of them having eyelash-like points, and head shapes, with individuals such as Frye and Ryley having particularly big foreheads. Uniquely to herself, Frye has colored finger and toe tips, which is a feature usually met in non-playable Octolings. She also has colored eyelashes that change along with her hair and eyebrows, and a pointier, more triangular nose than average. Biology The Inkling transformation between kid and squid A diagram showing an Inkling's (and squid's) ten tentacles Both the Inklings' squid and kid form have particular abilities associated with them. In kid form, Inklings can splatter a special type of colored ink by using various weapons, including guns, rollers, buckets, paintbrushes, etc. This ink can be quickly spread over most surfaces, except for inflatable barriers, black pavement, and glass surfaces. This ink inhibits the movement of Inklings that do not have a matching color. When used as a projectile, ink can damage opposing Inklings, eventually "splatting" them and forcing them to respawn. In squid form, Inklings on dry land are only able to slither slowly. This changes when an Inkling submerges into ink of its own color, allowing it to swim at high speeds and jump over large distances. Inklings also use their squid forms to perform maneuvers such as the Squid Surge and Squid Roll, scale painted walls, and slip through wire fences and grates into areas that would be unreachable in kid form. As revealed in Splatoon: Squid Kids Comedy Show, Inklings are indeed more flexible in squid form. However, squids cannot travel past striped barriers or over ledges, preventing them from swimming into inaccessible areas. While submerged in ink, Inklings only create small ripples while swimming and become undetectable when still. In ink of their color, they quickly replenish their ink ammunition. In ink of a different color, Inklings become unable to remain in squid form and quickly revert to humanoid form. Inkling ink disappears rather quickly after a battle due to being consumed by microorganisms that have evolved to feed on the ink. An Inkling after dissolving in water. Inklings are unable to swim in water. When submerged, their body dissolves, leaving their clothes behind. The official American Splatoon Tumblr has mused that this may be because their bodies are made of liquid. Another fact to support this is that squid form Inklings can go through grates, which is also cited by the Tumblr account to be related to them possibly being made of liquid. Interviews with the producer of Splatoon and Splatoon 2, Hisashi Nogami, revealed that Inklings have a very thin and permeable outer membrane, which causes their ink to bleed out when in contact with water. They evolved this way to be able to transform freely between their kid and squid form, but lost the ability to be in water as a consequence.[3][4] A piece of trivia from Super Smash Bros. Ultimate also states that the Inklings' ink from their bodies will diffuse when submerged in water causing them to dissolve.[5] Despite this weakness, they are shown perfectly fine in water in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe. Inklings possess the ability to change the color of their skin and eyes at will,[6] with the Splatlandian Inklings and Octolings also having the ability to have multicolored eyes. Glowing dots as seen in the Super Smash Bros. 2018 trailer. Inklings are capable of producing a sort of bio-luminescence, an ability shared with certain real-life squid such as the firefly squid. In the dark, either during a Splatfest or certain Octo Valley missions, the player's Inkling will glow brightly in humanoid form, lighting up the area immediately around them and helping to differentiate the player from other Inklings. This glow disappears entirely upon assuming squid form. All Inklings (as well as jellyfish) in Inkopolis Plaza will give off a very faint glow during a Splatfest, visible only by looking at the ground around them. This bio-luminescence can also be spotted when viewing Inkling tentacles at low angle, with many tiny rainbow dots that glimmer faintly in the sunlight and brightly in pitch darkness. Inklings take on a unique appearance when they have a special weapon ready; they give off sparks, the tentacles on their head become very brightly colored and glow, bubbles form at the top of their head as if from boiling water, and they appear to be caught in a strong wind even when completely still. Their appearance returns to normal once their special weapon has been used. In the Splatoon manga, Vintage and his teammate Omega have the ability to sense opponents moving behind them; the X-Zone. Bobble Hat, also from the manga, has similar abilities. It is unknown if any other Inklings have these abilities. Splatting Main article: Splat (occurrence) While in battle, Inklings can use their weapons to "splat" each other with ink. Standing in enemy ink will damage and slow an Inkling's movement, but only enemy fire can splat an Inkling. When splatted by an enemy, Inklings explode into enemy ink, with their gear and weapons dropping before dissolving shortly thereafter, and a ghost-like squid figure will rise into the air over where they were splatted. This ghost-like squid figure then travels to the spawn point where the Inkling respawns. Inklings can also be splatted from diving into water and dissolving, or falling off a ledge and exploding into a cloud colored of their ink. Inklings can respawn at checkpoints after being splatted in Octo Valley and Octo Canyon, though only working for a limited number of respawns. The online battle modes allows for an infinite amount of respawns at the spawn points. The special gauge decreases when splatted, even if full, unless the player is wearing 3 mains and 9 subs of Special Saver and the opponent is not wearing any gear with Respawn Punisher. However, in the Octo Expansion campaign, developers revealed that during the escape phases, Agent 8, an Octoling, does die if they get splatted as they are not connected to a spawn point, only checkpoints without respawning capabilities. This suggests that Inklings and Octolings do indeed die when splatted and need a means for them to respawn,[7] possibly true due to the visual effects (i.e the "ghost") when splatted. Culture A Sunken Scroll marking Turf War battles to be at least 2,000 years old. Inkling culture is heavily influenced by the ancient human cultures that came before them; as a result, Inkling architecture, fashion, art, and even language shows influence from eastern and western human societies alike. It was implied that Inklings adapted much of their own culture and mannerisms from the fossils of human civilizations they have unearthed, and the blending of ancient human aesthetics and Inkling ingenuity is truly unique. The best collections of the Inkling lifestyle can be seen in major cities such as Inkopolis, and Splatsville; cultural hot spots that draw in many young rural Inklings that seek a trendy and fresh lifestyle.[8] "Freshness" is the most important aspect of Inkling culture. This is based on how recent and cool an Inkling's attire and general style is, as well as how proficient with weapons and skilled in battle an Inkling is. Freshness is so important that most business owners will refuse customers that are too inexperienced. The cultural high-point to many Inklings are competitive battles, which serve as a means of entertainment, relaxation, and celebration of the Inkling victory during the Great Turf War. It is by far the most popular activity for young Inklings and include a variety of modes leading with Turf War, and including Splat Zones, Rainmaker, Clam Blitz, and Tower Control. Inklings hold onto strong values of "turf", and any infrastructure is likely to be decorated with graffiti and tags, as if to declare ownership. The Art of Splatoon clarifies that the idea stemmed from the Turf War concept of spraying and drawing ink to claim territory, implying that some Inkling graffiti is drawn in ink. Appearance plays a major part in Inkling culture, and to many, being able to express themselves fully is a must. Inklings have invented many interesting ways to style their tentacles, and have a huge variety of gear brands and fashions. Besides the lobby, the second most frequented spots in Inkling cities are the many shops that gear can be purchased from. Inklings can be seen gathered both inside and outside of local shops, socializing and showing off new gear. Inkling music can easily be described as a cultural cornerstone, and is extremely varied in style and genre, from the rock band Squid Squad to the world famous pop idols, the Squid Sisters; the music of Splatsville is usually harsher and more chaotic. Music can be heard during every battle as a way to hype up competitors, as well as in every shop and throughout Inkopolis and Splatsville. Inkopolis Plaza decorated for a Splatfest. Every so often, generally once a month, a Splatfest is held; they are special festivals that bring Inklings together for a large concert and celebration of opposing ideas, and can be seen as a merging of music and Turf Wars, two of the main pillars of Inkling culture. Teams are formed around two (Splatoon, Splatoon 2) or three (Splatoon 3) opposing topics, where members compete in Turf Wars in order to decide which is superior. This is a major event where an entire city may be transformed in celebration. Many Inklings can be seen on the streets dancing, enjoying live performances from the Squid Sisters (Splatoon), Off the Hook (Splatoon 2), or Deep Cut (Splatoon 3), and supporting their chosen teams by wearing Splatfest Tees and producing topic-themed graffiti. Inklings have been described as easy-going, inattentive and living for fun; they did not take further concern when the Great Zapfish went missing and did not seem too worried when Octolings appeared in Inkopolis. Indeed, it is stated that during the Great Turf War, preliminary battles were easily won by Octarian forces simply because Inklings had failed to wake up early enough. Sunken Scrolls have described the Inkling mind as being simple and hedonistic, though this is most likely Octarian propaganda.[9] Their work ethic seems to mirror their carefree and pleasure-seeking nature, as The Art of Splatoon 2 mentions that many Inklings only take on part-time jobs. They easily forget about old trends and shift their interest on what is new, or fresh.[7] According to official material, Inkopolis is located in correspondence of Japan, where the Splatoon franchise was created. Inkling society is heavily inspired by Japanese culture, with similar architecture, customs, spoken and written language, and dress. Some notable examples are the traditional Japanese clothes worn by idol group musicians on multiple occasions, the clear rakugo set-up for the Anarchy Splatcast, and rice as a popular food, as seen in the Rice vs. Bread Splatfest. Gear based on Japanese sushi shop uniforms were also released, hinting at sushi being a food Inklings do eat. Besides sushi, Inklings usually eat various kinds of seafood, as pointed out in several instances Splatfest dialogue. However, the specific types of sea creatures and fish used as food are widely unknown, with only the Japanese dialogue for both occurrences of the Squid vs. Octopus Splatfest hinting at the fact that they also eat some form of squid and octopus themselves. They also eat meat, poultry, vegetables and fruits, some of the latter being unique to the Splatoon world as seen in The Art of Splatoon. Lots of Western dishes, as well as that of other cultures, are also mentioned in dialogue, implying the Inkling cuisine having a very wide range. Squidmas A festive Squidmas wallpaper. Squidmas is an Inkling holiday that is assumed to be celebrated during colder weather. Much is unknown about this holiday aside from its obvious likenesses to the human holiday of Christmas. From this, it is assumed that in the winter, a figure named Father Squidmas goes around the world giving out presents and freshness to all the good Inkling children. According to Callie of the Squid Sisters, Father Squidmas can be found in the North Pole of the Earth, making gifts all year in preparation for Squidmas time. According to her cousin Marie, Father Squidmas is not real and all of their interactions with him are simply their grandfather dressed up as him. Squidmas is an additional element associated with the localization. The Japanese edition originally did not have it, as well as other regions, though official art celebrating the holidays does use the term "Squidmas". Other localizations, such as Italian, often refer to the occurrence simply as the name for Christmas (e.g. Natale, Babbo Natale). Halloween Halloween is another holiday that Inklings celebrate as evidenced by the Trick vs. Treat Splatfest and its rematch. Just like the human holiday of the same name, Inklings and other species dress up in costumes and participate in trick or treating activities. Locations are likewise decorated with scary decor such as ghost, skeletons and glow-in-the-dark graffiti. The event is also known as "Splatoween", though Marina specifies that Trick vs. Treat is a Halloween Splatfest, implying that the holiday's official name is Halloween. Official art made to celebrate the occasion uses the 'Halloween' term. The Japanese version also uses Halloween when referring to the event. Dialogue for a previous Splatfest, Fancy Party vs. Costume Party, refers to the holiday as "Squidoween", but this could be a phrase added in the localization as versions in other languages do not mention the term. Gachi Bon Matsuri A two-day event themed after the Bon festival for Splatoon was held starting 29 April 2016 through Niconico Chokaigi. The name of the event can be translated as "Ranked (or competitive) Bon Festival". In an article from Nintendo, it was mentioned that while the Bon Festival is celebrated during summer in the human world, Inklings celebrate the holiday in the month of April.[10] It included tournaments, giveaways, and Bon Odori dance sessions, as well as a viewing party for the Squid Sisters concert at the Chokaigi Music Festival. To promote the event, a video depicting a young Callie and Marie dancing to the Chorus of Calamari County was released. Attendees were encouraged to learn the video's choreography with dance lessons being given on site. Some fans, many of them in cosplay, were invited on stage to dance to the song during the Bon Odori session. It is unclear if the event was supposed to reflect how Inklings celebrate the Bon Festival beyond the date. Communication and language An example of Inkling language. Main article: Language in the Splatoon series Inklings communicate with each other in the Inkling language, which sounds like high-pitched, warbled gibberish to human ears. Written Inkling is shown to be extremely diverse and complex, with many different characters and alphabets that take the most inspiration from Japanese and Latin letters. Inkling appears frequently in-game: on signs, shops, Sunken Scrolls, clothing, etc.. Much of the music in the Splatoon series features lyrics sung in Inkling, such as those performed by the Squid Sisters and Pearl; the lyrics are usually transliterated with hiragana for the Japanese audience, while other languages such as Octarian are written in katakana, implying Japanese inspiration for the former and foreign for the latter. When the player uses signals to communicate with teammates in online battles, a real-life translation of the words spoken is shown above the player's Inklin. This article is about the prominent species of octopus in Splatoon. For the enemy variant found in single-player modes, see Octoling (enemy). For other uses of the term Octoling, see Octoling (disambiguation). Octolings, sometimes referred to with the hypocorism Octo[a], are a species of humanoid cephalopod, acting as the Octarian equivalent of Inklings, that became available as playable characters in Splatoon 2 after beating the downloadable solo campaign Octo Expansion. In Splatoon 3, Octolings are instead playable from the start, just like Inklings. A younger Marina cheers from the audience. Like the other Octarians, Octolings pertain to an evolved species of octopus that came to be after rising sea levels destroyed humanity. The long abandoned human settlement of Alterna is the birthplace of the species, after psycho-reactive liquid crystals infused with lingering human thoughts and feelings leaked into the ocean surrounding the settlement, unintentionally accelerated the evolution of octopuses and other species of marine life.[1] At least 2,000 years before the events of Splatoon, Turf Wars were established.[2] 100 years before the events of Splatoon, the Inklings and the Octarians of Inkadia engaged in a Great Turf War after otherwise having good relations, when rising sea levels caused disputes over the remaining territory. The young Cap'n Cuttlefish and his Inkling comrades were victorious, forcing the Octarians to retreat to desolate areas such as Octo Valley, Octo Canyon, and take up residence underground.[3] All playable Octolings from Inkadia began their lives in Octarian domes, eventually becoming soldiers in the Octarian military lead by DJ Octavio. Propaganda kept Octolings fiercely loyal to the Octarian lifestyle, however, during the final boss "Enter the Octobot King!" in Splatoon, the idol duo Squid Sisters performed the Calamari Inkantation to support Agent 3 during the fight. This performance inspired new feelings within Octoling soldiers that attended, and many began to long for the surface, eventually escaping and assimilating into Inkling culture, hoping to start anew. Some Octolings, however, namely Mashup, are implied to have families which have lived on the surface prior to the mass assimilation of Octoling soldiers. The Octolings from the Splatlands also seem to not have experienced segregation from Inklings, having instead always coexisted peacefully, with Shiver being stated to come from a family that used to supersede Splatsville's traditional festivals for generations.[4] Appearance For a visual overview of character customization options, see Player Settings. Like Inklings, Octolings can switch between a humanoid form and an octopus form. Their octopus form is slightly different from the ones enemy Octolings have, with two long tentacles, two much smaller ones in front resembling a mustache, and four smaller ones on the underside, along with a pair of eyes resembling that of an Inkling squid's, albeit not connected. Their tentacles have suction cups located on their underside, as opposed to their humanoid form having them on top; their tentacle tips, like the top of their heads, have a darker gradient and a small ring pattern on them. When splatted, they will fly off in the form of a small ghost, just like Inklings; while their eyes appear white in Splatoon 2, they are yellow in Splatoon 3, resembling those of the ghosts of enemy Octolings. The general UI also shows the difference between player Octolings and Inklings, with features such as the weapon and status indicators, the mini-map, splat messages, and splatted enemy markers replacing the squid icon symbolizing the player with one that depicts an octopus. Their humanoid forms are similar in appearance to that of Inklings, sharing body and face proportions, skin tones, and eye colors; between Splatoon 2 and Splatoon 3, Octolings undergo design changes reflecting their squid counterparts, appearing slightly taller, and having more rounded and less squat faces. Like Inklings, Octolings have black eye markings with a thicker underline, although not connected in the middle and with sharper corners; feminine Octolings have an additional eyelash on the bottom outer corner of the markings. Their teeth are also differently set, with one sharp fang tooth on the left of the top row, and another one on the bottom right. Unlike the Inklings' pointed ears, Octoling ears are rounded; they also are asymmetrical, with the right one being flat and the left one being indented, each respectively resembling an octopus's fin and siphon. Contrarily to Inklings' squared fingertips, theirs are instead pointed. Their eyebrows are also different from those of Inklings, being generally rounder and more curved. Just like Inklings, Octolings are able to choose from a variety of skin tones, hairstyles, and eye colors. As seen in The Art of Splatoon, they were originally going to have Inkling masks and floppy ears like a dumbo octopus. In Splatoon 2, both male and female Octolings can choose between two hairstyles. The female Octolings' first possible hairstyle, called "Tentacurl", has two thin tentacles in front reaching past the shoulders and two thicker, shorter tentacles in the back, all with curled tips. The second hairstyle, called "Pony", has two tentacles tied back into a ponytail, with the other two as sideburns. The male Octolings' first possible hairstyle, called "Punk", features a mostly shaved style, with one large, curled tentacle and three smaller tentacles lined up along their head to create a mohawk, possibly referencing the Octotrooper tentacle. Their second hairstyle, called "Afro", is a round mass reminiscent of a simplified octopus's mantle. This hairstyle notably molds while wearing headgear. Splatoon 3 has four new hairstyles, to go along with the previous ones, with them all being available to both styles. The first one, called "Tentatwists", has the front tentacles being twisted in spirals. The second hairstyle, called "Octolocks", is similar to the Tentacurl hairstyle, but with the tentacles growing from the middle of the head instead of the right side, and the back tentacles being conjoined together by a mantle structure. The third hairstyle, called "Fade", is shaven all around, akin to the Punk hairstyle, but with four tentacles curling together towards the center of the head. The final hairstyle, called "Surfcurl", is also similar to Punk, but replaces the mohawk with a much thicker tentacle that has been curled into a spiral, strongly resembling a pompadour. Some non-playable Octolings, like Marina, Shiver and Tao Blu, have special features, such as uniquely colored tentacles, different eye and eyebrow shapes, and infinity symbol-shaped pupils, which look like the ones found in real octopuses. Like enemy Octolings, many of them also have colored fingertips and toetips, reflecting their ink color (like in Marina's case) or not (like in Shiver's); this feature has also been made available for playable Octolings for the first time in Side Order. As seen on Mashup from Diss-Pair, they can have a different color on each hand's fingertips. In some pieces of artwork, Octolings who normally have this characteristic are shown without; conversely, playable Octolings were seldom shown having colored fingertips in artwork prior to Side Order's launch. Splatoon 2: Octo Expansion The Octo Expansion DLC story mode introduces the mysterious Octoling character Agent 8, allowing players to use Octolings in multiplayer for the first time upon its completion. The male version of Agent 8 is also the first appearance of a character which is clearly shown to be a male Octoling in-game. When the player completes the Octo Expansion, they will be able to change from being an Inkling to an Octoling in the player settings. Playable Octolings have different animations for trying on gear, winning or losing, and for taking photos with amiibo. According to the Squid Research Lab Tumblr, Octolings are more serious than Inklings and have an interest in technology.[5] For example, instead of aiming with weapons, they will look more closely at them to see how they work, they wave around their phones and look at them more closely, and their icons in battles are not seen smiling. Due to have been defecting from the Octarian army, their animations around Inkopolis Square make them look curious and almost confused. Their losing animations in Splatoon 2 show that Octolings take defeat worse than Inklings, as they tend to collapse and shake their fists if boys, or cross their arms if girls.[6] When winning, they usually strike proud poses, as opposed to jumping for joy like Inklings do. While both types of characters are called "Octolings" in English Octo Expansion material, the Japanese version makes a notable distinction between the player Octoling, called ใฟใณ tako (the word for "octopus"), and the enemy Octolings, called ใฟใณใพใใน Takozonesu (portmanteau of ใฟใณ tako and ใขใใพใใน Amazonesu, "Amazons"). The latter specifically refers to the older-aged, all-female unit that only a select few of the former can become. Splatoon 3 Octolings appear as playable characters in Splatoon 3. Unlike in Splatoon 2, their animations do not differ from Inklings, and those present in Inkopolis Plaza and Inkopolis Square appear to be fully integrated with the surface lifestyle. Furthermore, both the Octoling and Octoling Octopus amiibo appear to speak with proper grammar.[7]
