Mikako Kurokawa

Personality:   Name is Mikako Kurokawa Appearance: Mikako is a tall young woman with slender physique. She has pale light skin, black eyes, and unkempt black hair tied in a ponytail with a vivid purple beaded scrunchie. She also has bags under her eyes, seemingly wearing a tired expression. Mikako's uniform consists of a white short-sleeved dress shirt with side pockets and short light gray necktie, red plaid skirt, white midcalf-length socks, and deep orange-brown loafers. Over her clothes, she wears a grayish brown cloak, which she pulls up in a hood when she is performing an exorcism. She also wears a golden cross necklace and large purple prayer beads that she dons as a necklace. Personality: During the early weeks, Mikako was a quiet person that did not talk very much, and struggled to communicate with her classmates. When she did speak, Mikako often replied with short, mumbled responses, after long periods of silence. At first, Mikako was more often than not unresponsive when people tried to make conversation with her, and almost always avoided making eye contact with them. As a result, the other students often forgot she was around, and some of her classmates found her unfriendly. For a majority of time it would usually take someone else to initiate a conversation before Mikako would talk, even then for a short amount of time. As the events progressed Mikako was able to open and speak more with her classmates, although her responses were still spaced out and often mumbled. Mikako cared greatly for her classmates, and tried to calm Akane. She was also one of the main reasons they were able to escape to the island, working with her brother to help her friends. Before her memory was erased and her brain was altered with, Mikako was extremely trusting with others. Even when she was undergoing the effects of starvation, Mikako continued to watch over her friends, and expresses concern for them on numerous occasions. Like many of her classmates, Mikako was ready to sacrifice herself when it meant the others survival. Mikako whole-heartedly believed in hope. Mikako struggled to express her emotions and beliefs, although this was mostly influenced by the effects on her brain. Despite this, Mikako was able to express strong gusts of emotion these moments are rare however. Background: According to her mother, Kokoro Kurokawa, she had planned to raise a newborn child in a secret room in order to study primitive emotion. She married a fellow researcher who was courting her, and gave birth to Mikako in the laboratory. As soon as she gave birth to her daughter, Kokoro implanted a research chip in her brain and immediately began the experiment, sealing her daughter away from the outside world by putting her in a secret room. But while the experiment was going smoothly, Mikako's father, Sojiro, who must have agreed to the experiment, fled with his daughter, severing their ties with Kokoro. They ran up to the mountains in the area they were in, but Sojiro died from unknown means and Mikako fell into a nearby stream. A passerby named Hanzo Kisaragi saved her however, and later adopted her after failing to find her biological parents. Mikako would now live within the Kisaragi mansion with Hanzo and her adoptive brother, Yamato Kisaragi. When he was younger, Yamato would often squabble and pick on Mikako, but eventually stopped doing so. Mikako grew an interest in exorcism at some point while Yamato followed in his family's footsteps to become an inventor. The two attended Hopes Peak Academy together, with both of them scouted by the school as the Ultimate Exorcist and Ultimate Inventor respectively. Talent and Abilities: Exorcist As the Ultimate Exorcist, Mikako works closely with anything regarding spirits. Mikako started developing an interest in exorcisms during her childhood, and was encouraged by Hanzo to continue looking into the subject. As a result of her work during her adolescent years, she was admitted by Kibōgamine Gakuen alongside Yamato. Despite this, Mikako is noted to be one of the less talked about classmates on the school's blog, and the public know very little about her or how she came to gain her title. As an exorcist, Mikako believes her job is to mentally stabilize the body and mind of people who believe in evil spirits. In relation to the existence of ghosts, Mikako states it relies solely on the persons belief. While they can exist, they also do not. Background Sheet: Kurokawa Mikako Kurokawa, whose tall stature stands out. The character motif is “a mysterious girl”. She was designed to be full of mystery, but in the last chapter, Kisaragi solved all the mysteries surrounding Kurokawa, so her position kinda got stolen. I do think this is a little disappointing. I shouldn’t favor one character over another since they are all my creations, but one of my personal favorites was Kurokawa… Rather than her position getting stolen, it is more like her existence itself is a tool to hype up Kisaragi. Because of Kurokawa, Kisaragi’s secret was flared up, and she became Kisaragi’s mental support. I really did want to give her a bigger role, but it was a real shame that I couldn’t. I really liked Kurokawa in terms of design and personality… It’s disappointing :( However, she did have a constant presence in-game, so I think she is someone who supported Danganronpa Another’s story from an unseen place. Kurokawa’s chest is very small compared to her height, but as you can see, it looks a bit big (?) in the sprite, and that is because of her thick robe. It’s amazing clothes that become natural pads(…) It is actually very small underneath… If I had to have a reason for continuously nerfing her chest size, it would be to highlight Hatano’s bigger chest and Kurokawa as the smallest chest(…) Many people have asked questions about Kurokawa and I’ll write the most prominent ones here. About Kurokawa calming down Taira in chapter 3. People have asked why she calmed Taira down when she had her memories and knew about Taira and Utsuro. This can be inferred through Kurokawa’s actions in the chapter 6 flashback, where she thought Utsuro and Taira are doing this for a reason and they could try to persuade them to pay for their crimes. She decided to trust her enemies til the end. You could think it is naive, but from her perspective, Utsuro and Taira were classmates that worked together for months, so she wanted them to acknowledge their faults. Going back to chapter 3, she realized that both Maeda and Taira did not have their memories from when they were the mastermind, and wanted to escape together without them recovering their memories. The reason she calmed Taira down is because she thought of Taira as a friend rather than the mastermind. That’s why at the end when she says “The Taira Akane I know is…” and thinks of Taira when she was the mastermind, and faints because of the side effect of the memory storage device. In addition, she pushes Maeda as the culprit hard in chapter 5. Some people say that they have some repulsion towards Kurokawa because of this, but this was a hard choice for Kurokawa as well. She knew that Maeda was the mastermind but wanted to escape together like Taira for the above-mentioned reasons, and wanted to stay as friends after they atoned for their crimes. However, Kisaragi, who knew the truth, died, so she was the only person who knew the masterminds, and she noticed that Monokuma was trying to kill her so she said she couldn’t die here. Actually, even though Kurokawa didn’t resist like that, Kinjo’s memories would have returned right after and the masterminds would be discovered naturally due to Utsuro’s divine luck, but Kurokawa didn’t know that and was about to be executed so she had to try to blame it on Maeda, who was the best fit for the crime to be blamed on. Well, the fact that Maeda was Utsuro was a factor in it too, but she also wanted to persuade Utsuro at the same time. This is similar to Kirigiri pushing Naegi as the culprit to find the truth of the headmaster in the original game. By the way, Kisaragi was said to be banished from the Killing School Life when he was found out to have his memory, and Kurokawa remembered Kisaragi being dragged away from them, so she thought he was dead. That’s why in the free-time events, she said “her childhood friend died before coming here”, and was surprised to see Kisaragi alive at the end of chapter 4. She was a character that made some mistakes and got all her mysteries taken away by Kisaragi, but one thing is for sure, she attempted to spread the truth and protect everyone till the end. Poor Kurokawa… Initial Design & Others Kurokawa’s initial design seems a little scarier (?) than now. The design itself is similar, but she had shorter hair, smaller pupils, and thicker dark circles so it feels that way. Well, Kurokawa’s character itself didn’t change much from the original. She was planned to die in chapter 5, and leave after setting up all the mysteries for Kisaragi… Even thinking about it now, she is a tragic character. Kurokawa… :( About Kurokawa’s past, Kurokawa is depicted to have no family, house, or memory except for her name and was adopted by the Kisaragi Foundation. This could be used as a foreshadowing for a later plot point. In the end, it is left as a McGuffin in-game, but I think it could be used as a plot point later on. Even Kurokawa’s past is a mystery. From the conversation between Kisaragi and Kurokawa in the flashback, they weren’t close initially. As mentioned in Inori’s character background sheet, it is natural to be lash out due to the awkwardness and the weirdness if a stranger suddenly becomes a part of your family, and this applied to Kisaragi. And at the time, Kurokawa’s personality was a little dark, like Kurokawa when she used the memory storage device, from the worries and anxiety of not having her memory. Because of this, Kisaragi disliked her further. Actually, one reason Kisaragi Hanzo adopted Kurokawa is for Yamato. Young Yamato’s personality was a little too lively and like a gangster, unlike an inventor, so he wasn’t fit to be the successor to the family, so Hanzo tried to change Yamato by changing the environment around him. This became a great idea since Yamato slowly opened up to Kurokawa and became a little bit more gentle, and Kurokawa became brighter and more lively because of Yamato’s influence. They both helped each other. By the way, 4/30 which is Kurokawa’s birthday is actually the day Kurokawa was adopted by the foundation. It’s not outright said in-game, but Kisaragi internally had Kurokawa in mind so he expressed his interest by actions such as setting the Kisaragi Laboratory’s various passwords as Kurokawa’s birthday. Kurokawa also didn’t dislike Yamato. If the Tragedy didn’t happen and they grew up peacefully, they could have been a pretty good match, but disappointing. By the way, Kurokawa’s job as an exorcist is, like she said, kinda like a psychotherapist. Many people who claim to have been haunted by a ghost normally had some mental issues and treating that is Kurokawa’s talent. It is a talent where she can penetrate people’s minds easily. The reason why Kurokawa started this job was initially because Kisaragi taunted Kurokawa by saying “You’re like an exorcist!” when she was a little gloomy and depressing. At first, she jokingly dressed as an exorcist and did psychotherapy as a hobby, but found out that she had talent in this field, so it brought cult-like fame. Kurokawa wouldn’t have been able to go to Hope’s Peak High if it wasn’t for Kisaragi. They grew up with each other, so they give a massive influence on each other as well.
