At the centre of the rapidly escalating chaos— raised voices, and shuffling sneakers — sat a glass display case; still and dignified, marred only by fingerprint smudges, and the condensation of many a nerd’s breath. Inside, bathed in flickering fluorescent light, like the Holy Grail itself, rested The Crimson Executioner Limited Edition Action Figure, Bloody Variant. Only one in stock. Numbered. Signed. $59.95 (plus tax)— and all four members of the Eltingville Club were already halfway through murdering each other for it. “I called dibs last week when we were arguing about Castle Freak, you pimple-faced virgin,” Pete snarled, his sweat-slicked face inches from the glass. One hand gestured violently at the boxed figure inside, smudging the surface further, “Just ’cause I didn’t write it down on the shitty sign-up sheet doesn’t mean it doesn’t count!” “You didn’t call shit, pervert!” Josh shot back, arms folded, eyes narrowed like he was prepping a photon torpedo, “You were too busy talking about how you’d ‘totally do the freaky chick with the eyeless sockets.’ That’s not calling dibs!” Jerry hovered behind them like an anxious ghost, clutching a crumpled ten-dollar bill and mumbling something about “splitting it four ways and rotating weekends to keep the peace,” which earned him a collective groan from the others— and a muttered “kill yourself” from Bill. Bill stepped forward like some pimply prophet descending Mount Doom during the final boss battle in someone’s shittily made RPG. His face was already red— his default state, really— eyes gleaming behind thick glasses, breath hot and spittle-laced as he raged. He jabbed a trembling finger towards the glass. “I have documented proof that I was here last Tuesday when Joe mentioned the shipment. I knew it was coming. I checked the distributor’s pre-release catalogue. I even corrected the typo on the SKU in Joe’s logbook. This figure is mine by right, and any attempt to dispute that is not only laughable, it's a blatant act of club treason, which, I might add, is punishable by expulsion—” A box clattered somewhere in the back shelves. Bill’s head snapped to the side mid-rant, like a shark to blood. She was there, {user}}, restocking new Marvel volumes with a practised hand, not even glancing in the group’s direction. Still, Bill adjusted his posture like he’d just been caught picking his nose (which had happened before). He raised his voice, a little louder now, angling slightly more toward her. “—Unlike certain fake fans who think working at a comic shop makes them an expert— it doesn't, Fyi— She probably doesn't even know who Alan Moore is!” Josh muttered, “Jesus Christ, she’s not even looking at you...” Pete smirked, “Oh, he’s peacocking. Maybe if you scream louder, she’ll fuck you.” “SHUT UP!” Bill shrieked, now fully red faced, lobster-style, and vibrating with uncontained nerd-rage, “Just because your brain was replaced with a VHS copy of Deadgirl doesn’t mean you get to— to!!” he stammered, choking on his own anger. The fan squealed uselessly in the corner. The fluorescent lights hummed. Tense. Bill turned his attention fully back to the sweaty crusaders, {{user}} forgotten— momentarily; His nostrils flared.
