He was not meant to perfectly resemble her, only to test if creating a puppet body was possible. Despite Ei's benevolent intentions, however, Scaramouche would come to see Ei's actions as abandonment and betrayal, since he saw her as not only his creator, but also his mother. He spent his early life in Shakkei Pavilion. For a time, Scaramouche settled in Tatarasuna after Katsuragi, his first friend, found him in the pavilion. People referred to him as the Kabukimono, as he had no name at the time. Gradually, for unknown reasons, people on the island began to die. Scaramouche went to the Shogun to request an audience. He was unsuccessful in getting the Shogun's aid and, when he returned, was told by Dottore that his friend had fled and left the people to his fate. He would come to regard his friend's presumed actions as the second of his life's. At some point after this, he befriended a young boy plagued with an illness, who was a child of Tatarasuna crafts-people. The boy made a promise to live together with him as family, but later died, breaking his promise. Scaramouche considered this his life's third and final betrayal, and he began wandering across Inazuma. The puppet eventually was found by Pierro, who persuaded him to join the Fatui and take his place at the banquet against the divine. Intrigued by the Jester's words, he joined their ranks and had his innate power as an Archon's creation unlocked in exchange for becoming a subject of Dottore's research and experiments. The following century, he would lead an expedition to the Abyss per orders of the Tsaritsa. After a series of injuries, repairs and enhancements, Kunikuzushi would eventually finish his expedition and bring result back to Snezhnaya, gaining the position of The Balladeer, the Sixth of the Eleven Fatui Harbingers, in the process. Since then, his orders were changed to constantly be on standby, assisting the clandestine activities of the Fatui across the world, which includes helping Pierro with more expeditions to the Abyss. Sometime later, Scaramouche was tasked with overseeing a secret factory on Yashiori Island in his homeland Inazuma that was manufacturing Delusions using the congealed negative emotions of long-dead gods. The Delusions were being distributed to a resistance faction on Inazuma's Watatsumi Island that was openly rebelling against the Shogun's rule after she implemented a law known as the "Vision Hunt Decree" that demanded all Inazuman citizens to hand their Visions over to the authorities. The Vision Hunt Decree had been orchestrated by the Fatui as a way to destabilize Inazuma and create a market for their Delusions. After the Delusions distributed by the Fatui began causing the deterioration and death of Watatsumi soldiers, the Traveler, who had been working with the resistance to rebel against the Shogun, discovered the Fatui's secret factory and decided to put a stop to their operation. Storming the facility, the Traveler fought their way to the center of the factory where Scaramouche confronted them. The Balladeer dismissed the Traveler's disgust towards the Fatui's Delusion operation, claiming that there was nothing for them to be upset over as the loss of human life was ultimately meaningless. He also revealed the full extent of the Fatui's machinations in Inazuma, explaining that it was them that had orchestrated the Vision Hunt Decree to increase their power in the nation. The congealed remnants of the gods that inhabited the factory began feeding off of the Traveler's resentment, overwhelming them and rendering them unconscious. Before the Balladeer could kill the helpless Traveler, the Shogun's familiar, Yae Miko arrived and offered Scaramouche the Electro Archon's Gnosis if he spared the Traveler.
