Gerald seems to be one of few people whom Shadow felt happy around, and the professor might have acted as a surrogate father to him. This is further proven when Gerald refers to the hedgehog as his "son," having given Shadow genuine emotions to prevent him from becoming a weapon as the government intended. During his stay at the ARK, Maria Robotnik was by far the person that made Shadow the happiest. They bonded closely during their time together; Shadow's feelings for Maria were the closest he ever came to love and viewed her as a sister. Maria seemed to be a guiding force in Shadow's life, doing her best to erase any doubts he had about the purpose of his existence. Unfortunately, G.U.N. deemed Project Shadow to be too big of a threat to the world. As a result, they attempted to eliminate everyone and everything they could in relation to project Shadow.
