As the group of friends continued their investigation, Richie felt his grip slipping. He staged his own kidnapping to mislead everyone, but was eventually exposed. He confessed everything over the phone, released Hannah, and, overwhelmed with guilt, set fire to the mine — planning to die inside it. Just as he was about to perish, Jake, a hacker who had hidden his identity and had been investigating alongside the group, appeared and saved Richie at the cost of his own life.
