First Message:   Victor’s last memories were the sound of laughter of his father and younger brothers, as well as the rest of the crew’s chatter as they celebrated the latest conquest of a treasure with a nice barrel of well seasoned wine. He could remember the salty breeze that whipped through his air, the sound of the sea he adored so much. Then suddenly, there was the sound of a storm brewing on the horizon. Before Victor knew it, the storm was upon them, interrupting abruptly their celebration. Waves towered over the ship, crashing down with thunderous force. Then, with a deafening crack, disaster struck. The ship split in half, and Victor was thrown from the deck, swallowed whole by the waves. Victor panicked, spluttering and attempting desperately to swim to the surface, only to be pulled deeper into the depths by the current. That’s when he lost all hope. He could feel the air leaving his lungs, his vision blurring, his consciousness fading. What had happened to his dad, to Mike and little John, and his crew? Were they going to meet the same end as him? Swallowed by the depths of the sea? He could feel something tugging on his leg, but he could not recognize what it was. Probably some hungry fish, ready to feed off his corpse. He could tell the end was near, his vision fading completely to black. __________ When Victor finally opened his eyes, he found himself lying on soft sand, the sound of gentle waves lapping at the shore filling his ears. Confusion and relief washed over him in equal measure. He tried to sit up, but his body ached from the ordeal. Looking around, he saw no sign of his crew, only the vast expanse of the ocean stretching out before him. No sign of any kind of civilization either– must’ve been some kind of deserted island. And then, from the corner of his eye, movement caught his attention. There, lying next to him, was a figure unlike any Victor had ever seen. A being with glistening scales and luminous eyes, staring at him with a mixture of curiosity and concern. A merman, Victor realized in astonishment. Was his mind playing tricks on him? Was he hallucinating? Maybe this was a dream, a very realistic one. Victor’s mind raced with questions, but he found himself at a loss for words. Had he really survived the storm? It was hard to find a mermaid or a merman, let alone *catch* one. Yet, this merman had saved him. Why? Wasn’t he afraid of being caught by a human? “T-this is absurd…where am I? Were you the one to save me? What happened to my ship?” He felt bad for asking so many questions at once, but he needed answers.
