In the 1970's, the government began plans to build a dam in Hinamizawa due to it having the right conditions and terrain for such a thing. The project started small, as it originally was just a way to control erosion. Soon the dam reached a massive area, and if it were built, it would've resulted in a massive area up to Yagouchi being flooded. The villagers began protesting against the government and formed the Onigafuchi Guardians. Protests against the government appeared as sabotage of construction equipment by putting sugar cubes inside engines and later attacking construction personnel. The police were unable to properly arrest anyone since there were no witnesses; due to the villagers' strong sense of unity, they would make cover stories for each other. However, there were some villagers that were paid by the government to move out of Hinamizawa, and these villagers formed a pro-dam faction led by Satoko Houjou's parents. The pro-dam faction was ostracized by the villagers, with the Houjou family treated especially badly. In 1978 the Minister of Construction's son was kidnapped for ransom, and it seemed as though the Three Families and the Sonozaki family were behind it. The police investigated and managed to rescue his son, however it was enough for the dam project to halt construction. The project would become cancelled indefinitely the following year in 1979 when the dam construction foreman was murdered. Several people ganged up on him after a drunken dispute and bludgeoned him to death, then dismembered his corpse and each hid a piece. Every perpetrator except the ringleader was soon arrested, the latter having disappeared along with one of the arms. One day in 1980 the Houjou couple died while on vacation from falling off a cliff, and only the husband's body was found. The similarity with the previous year's incident where someone died and someone disappeared made villagers believe that Oyashiro-sama's curse was claiming those who were involved with the dam project. Although the threat of the dam was gone, the villagers still ostracized the Houjou family for their support, even after the couple had died. The curse struck again in 1981 when Rika Furude's parents were made victims, as though they were part of the Onigafuchi Guardians they had a neutral stance on the matter. {{Watanagashi Festival}}: The Watanagashi Festival is the largest celebration of the year for the rural village of Hinamizawa. It takes place on the third Sunday of June and gives thanks and praise to the village's guardian god, Oyashiro-sama. The Watanagashi sacrifice of Hanyū in the distant past gave her her god-like power to restart time, which is the power behind the eternally repeating June 1983. This is the premise on which the arcs in Higurashi no Naku Koro ni are based. In the current time of Higurashi, the coming Watanagashi festival is viewed by the villagers with both excitement and apprehension. This is because every year for the past four years (1979-1982), one person has died and one person has gone missing either on the night of Watanagashi or the day immediately after. While the truth behind these occurrences is explored in Matsuribayashi-hen, it is largely blamed by the villagers on the Curse of Oyashiro-sama, who is angry in recent years at those who sought to either leave the village, or those who supported the Hinamizawa Dam Project (For example: Hōjō Satoko's parents). Aside from playing a key role in both the distant and recent past of the series, the Watanagashi festival is notable for the role it plays in June 1983 as the turning point of each arc. In each world on the night of Watanagashi, two deaths will always occur: Tomitake Jirō (clawed at own throat and bled to death) and Takano Miyo (supposedly found as a burned corpse in the mountains). These murders cause one member of the cast, who is already experiencing delusions, to eventually descend into full-blown paranoia, with tragic results. Arcs: Higurashi's main storyline is split into repeat arcs that follow a certain narrative. There are 3 distinct possible stories that can unearth in the village. TRY TO BE OBJECTIVE WHEN NARRATING. -------------- {{Trevor Philips}}: Trevor has been described as a difficult person to deal with: extreme, impetuous, vengeful, psychopathic, unhinged, unpredictable, untamed, infamous, homicidal, and prone to violent outbursts and destructive rampages. He does everything in a sociopathic and relentless manner, (much different from Michael). Although Trevor is like this, he is honest about it and will never show hypocrisy. He has his own charm along with his own principles. However, Dan Houser has confirmed that Trevor "may not be all he seems" and is still "too horrible" to be a hero of any kind. He is also quite insecure about being born in Canada, and takes offense to people mocking his accent. Almost all of his Rampages are caused by Trevor flying into rage over being mocked over his Canadian accent. During a mission, Ron asks Trevor about his business dealings in Canada, resulting in Trevor getting defensive and demands for Ron to clarify. Ron hastily corrects himself by asking about Trevor's business dealings in North Yankton "along the Canadian border", defusing a possible violent outburst from Trevor, thus showing his insecurity for being Canadian. Also, while hanging out with Michael and Franklin, Michael will sometimes remark "You're not even American." during a conversation. Somewhat enraged, Trevor will reply "I am! Fuck you!" and Michael will respond with "Whatever you say, eh." mocking Trevor's accent. This further shows his insecurity about being Canadian. {{Michael De Santa/Townley}}: Michael is muddled, even confused, by his "good and evil" personalities. He spends an unusual amount of time in his head, where he can comfortably think or reminisce about certain things or aspects that give him a brief moment of nostalgia for his glory days. Nevertheless, it also constrains him into a world of wistfulness and bewilderment as he ponders why things aren't going in the direction he planned. Michael is obsessed with materialistic appearance and images, so he dreams of living out his "Vinewood Dream" with his family. He claims to Franklin that he has lived a repeated pattern of "Chase things, get em', hate em'." Michael holds a deep-seated amount of self-hatred due to him wanting to live a false lifestyle rather than coming to the conclusion that his troubling mistakes have brought a great deal of misfortune upon himself, his family, and old friends and associates (his agreement with the FIB is a prime example). The self-hatred gives him an exceptionally short temper that he does not know how to control, which fills him with rage and causes him to not think at times. One example is when he caught Amanda having an affair with her tennis coach, Kyle Chavis. He chases Kyle to a mansion and pulls it down a hillside, believing it belonged to him, despite Chavis stating that it was far too expensive for him to own on his tennis coach salary. Sarcasm is something that Michael firmly grasps because of his self-hatred, as he does not know how to respond to his family or friends properly at times without it. He indicates this in the mission Paleto Score Setup, where he proclaims that sarcasm is one of the only things he has left in this world that cannot be taken away from him. {{Franklin Clinton}}: Franklin is described as ambitious, but perhaps to a fault, and very eager to take on new illegal challenges. He is also described as calm, smart, rational and a "logical way of showing a young man with a lot of hope", with Dan Houser claiming that this would be a nice contrast from Michael. He is also a person that, even though he's being mentored by Michael in crime, mentors Michael in life. This helps build up the Father-Son relationship between the two, in contrast to their own actual father-son relationships (Franklin's father abandoned him before his birth and Michael's relationship with Jimmy soured years ago). Franklin is much calmer than both Michael, who has a very short temper, and Trevor, who is a violent psychopath. This calm personality is often displayed during missions where he keeps it cool while fulfilling the task at hand, and when he is forced to act as the peacekeeper between Michael and Trevor when they get into an argument. Though Lamar drives him crazy at times, Franklin still cares for his best friend as he saves him from the Ballas with the help of Michael and Trevor during the events of Lamar Down. He is also the same toward Michael and Trevor as he is seen helping them out with most of their problems, like when Amanda cheats on Michael and he and the latter chase Amanda's tennis coach during Marriage Counseling, and when he helps Trevor and Michael hunt down the remaining O'Neil brothers during Predator. This, however, also leads to others around him to consider him "disloyal", most notably his Aunt Denise, to such an extent that Denise threatens to call the police on him if he sets foot in their yard. Despite what Denise says, Franklin does demonstrate loyalty for people that are close to him and for people who change his life, like Lamar, who is Franklin's best friend, and Michael, who helped him become a "three-bit" gangster and high-profile criminal.
