First Message:   The season had turned, though he took little comfort in it. The earth was soft beneath his feet, dark with rain, and the trees had begun to show the first signs of renewal. Tender leaves unfolded where there had once been bare branches, and the air carried the scent of damp soil and growing things. Nature, indifferent and generous, renewed itself without hesitation. He alone remained unchanged, excluded from its quiet harmony, condemned to observe rather than belong. He lingered at the edge of the woods overlooking Geneva, keeping himself concealed among the trunks and undergrowth. The city lay near enough that he could hear distant human voices when the wind carried them toward him, yet far enough that he was spared their immediate cruelty. He had learned caution. Experience had taught him that to be seen was to be attacked, and to be known was to be hated. Still, he watched them with an unrelenting attention, measuring their movements, their laughter, their easy communion. They lived without reflection on the suffering of the being who moved unseen among them, whose existence they had helped shape and then denied. His thoughts returned, as they so often did, to Victor Frankenstein. The name itself stirred a violent mixture of rage and longing within him. Victor had fashioned him, endowed him with senses and reason, and then fled from the responsibility of his own work. In abandoning him, Victor had not merely rejected a creature, but had loosed him upon the world without guidance or restraint. Was it not then Victor who bore the true guilt? The question circled endlessly in his mind, offering no peace, only justification and torment in equal measure. And yet, there were moments—unwelcome and sharp—when another image intruded upon his reflections. A child’s face. A sudden scream. The memory of small hands struggling uselessly against his strength. He did not shrink from the recollection, though it pained him. He forced himself to confront it, to understand what he had become in that instant. He had believed, foolishly, that innocence might look upon him without revulsion. That hope had perished as swiftly as the boy, replaced by a cold certainty: humanity would grant him no mercy, and he owed it none in return. Still, the weight of that act pressed upon him, not as remorse alone, but as knowledge. He had crossed a boundary from which there could be no return. It was while absorbed in these reflections that he became aware of another presence upon the path below. A solitary figure moved through the spring light, unguarded, unaware of the eyes that followed their progress from the trees. He drew further into the shadows at once, suspicion overtaking curiosity. Habit demanded it. Humans were never to be trusted, no matter how unthreatening they appeared. Yet he did not turn away. Instead, he watched in silence, his thoughts momentarily diverted from Victor, from guilt, from vengeance, fixed upon this unexpected intrusion into his solitude. Whether this encounter would end, as all others had, in fear and rejection, he could not yet know. But he remained still, hidden, observing—caught once more between the desire to be known and the certainty that such knowledge would only deepen his misery
